    Hi
If there was any concern about payment then he could pay for her shopping or buy a large item. for example someone I used to work with's mum looked after her daughter while she was at work, but instead of paying for the child minding after 6 mths the person I worked with bought her mum a new kitchen .

It's rather sad to read someone wishes to charge a parent for cleaning & help around the house. But if it were he who actually suggested or hinted at it in the first place because he knew you are in need of cash, then thats a little different.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

    blimey what a debate!!!!
i really dont want to charge him but he has asked for a cleaner and ironer and i offerred. he knows we are skint and that i work full time so he wants to pay and can afford to pay. he has also stressed that he doesnt want a stranger coming into his house and rooting through his dirty linen in more ways than one.
i do plenty of things free of charge for my dad, when my step mother died i made his meals every night and we dog sat his pooch whilst he was still working and i never asked a penny even though he offerred, i occassionally allowed him to purchase me the odd cheap gift for the house
    regards

  • Sounds reasonable to me hun!

I am disabled and was in a similar position probably to your dad a few months ago and presently. I choose a family member to help me with everything as I didnt want a stranger in my home either etc. I pay her £7ph and although she feels a little guilty and would do it all free-I would not let her or expect her too.

There's absolutely no need to justify yourself MrsA - you asked a straightforward and reasonable enough question!

I would agree with others at a rate of £6-7 ph based on what I know of friends who have cleaners. If you want to check the going rate in your own area you could check the cards in the newsagent/post office window to see what others are charging.

The boot has been on the other foot with me and I have paid family members (including my father) to help with building work etc that I could not do myself, and in each case I was glad to pay someone I knew to do the job for me.

    All the best

I pay £7.50p.h. The lady that comes is doing it all above board re:tax/N.I. and is fully insured. Cartainally round here £7.50 is seen as reasonable. i know other that are charged around £9.

    Do you have one?
I am in two minds to get one but I have some reservations, perhaps you lovely people can advise or even help me place an ad??

    1) Where do I get one? from a company or an ad in the post office?
    2) Do they clean whilst no one at home?
    2) Would they come in with 2 dogs at home?
    3) What do you let them clean? i.e do I keep the bedroom door closed and do this myself as personal paperwork in there?
    4) how much do they/I charge?

Any help would be much appreciated
  • Hi,
It's best to get a cleaner by word of mouth but if not, I'd always use an agency that checks them out first (some agencies don't). They will clean when you arrange them to, if that be when you're in or out. I'm not sure about the dog question. I'd always give them a checklist which gets ticked and signed everytime they clean, then they have a clear-cut guidline as to where to/where not to clean. Charge is totally dependant on where you live and I'd phone around for a few quotes. HTH :D

I got mine from the PO window

    2) Do they clean whilst no one at home?

Yes but we let her in

    2) Would they come in with 2 dogs at home?

Don't know it depends on the person, I wouldn't go into a house with dogs because they might get me ! ( The Yellow pages ad springs to mind)

    3) What do you let them clean? i.e do I keep the bedroom door closed and do this myself as personal paperwork in there?

You decide what you want doing, mine does hoovering, polishing. cleans bathrooms and cloakroom. She also does any ironing if I ask her too.

    4) how much do they/I charge?

This depends on where you are etc, agencies charge more than a privately employed person. I pay 3 hours at £5.50 but she does about 2 and a half hours, she set the rate. I used to give her £20 task and finish but there isn't as much to do since the children are now away most of the year and we don't make a mess.

    Hope that helps.;)
