I am also needing to look into this for somebody I know. They have electricity with British Gas but already pay by direct debit on click energy 5. Is the essentials tariff going to be any cheaper than this?0
-
Yes it will be cheaper at least till 1.4.08 as the latest increase is not being charged. This of course assumes Click 5 prices will increase within a few weeks.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

I called them last week and because I am on Income Support and Disability Living Allowance I do qualify. So the price stays the same until April 2009.
I am also on prepayment so if you think that you can't get on Essentials because of it, you can.
Plus I was told I would get a small discount too.
Now I await the letter confirming this.
I looked on e.ons site but couldn't find anything similar.
Now Brown is making noises that parents of children under 16 might be getting £150 cold weather grant. How about us disabled who are stuck at home and not 60 yet? If it happens and we get nothing I shall be writing more complaining letters than you can shake a stick out.0 -
why is not all companys having this Essentials Tariff
thought goverment was doing things to help
but looking at things its seems only british gas is??
as i asked before still not sure about electric with british gas , after Essentials Tariff , will it be just the same on scottish power tariff that they are on now, no differance in price,
wish they would make things more easy to compare and be able to see which is better
but that would be too easy :-)0 -

Other coompanies have their own social tariff, with different qualifying criteria and different discounts. Some may have stricter criteria but bigger discounts or vice versa (I'm guessing).
BG were making a big deal earlier in the year that their contribution was more than double the other suppliers put together.
There are a few other threads out there where people have phoned around to see what other suppliers offer.0 -
anyone on here that has gotten a 'Essentials Tariff ' from another company apart from British Gas, have enquired with Scottishpower and they dont do any :-(
so looking for advice from anyone who has changed to another company offering a 'Essentials Tariff' .
I see that EDF have Energy Assist which gives households a 15% discount on current standard tariff prices?
which seems quite a bit of help off bills
thankyou0 -
Have been told Essentials Tariff was scrapped in October.
Looks like it has been replaced with Essentials Advance package:
-Energy efficiency advice
-Free insulation - which could help you save up to £275* off your bills
-£50 discount off your next bill once your free insulation has been installed.

Thanks a lot Gordon Brown.0 -

I have just had my first full bill on the Essentials Tariff, the saving on this one bill is over £30, over 40% !!!
Cost of my gas bill (inc. VAT):
-on Essentials = £43.07 (rate 4.192 p/kWh exVAT)
-on Standard Tariff =£74 (rate 7.203 p/kWh exVAT)
Very happy. :T :j :beer:0 -
Had a letter that Essentials Gas rates increased by 15% from 4-Jun as follows:Any price increase is postponed till April 2009, so you remain on old rates.
Gas Rates I was quoted were (excl. VAT):
Tier 1: 4.192p/kWh
Tier 2: 2.314p/kWh
Ps: BG Essentials rates confirmed in a letter from British Gas.
.
Tier 1: 4.737p/kWh (inc. VAT), 4.511p/kWh (exc. VAT)
Tier 2: 2.873p/kWh (inc. VAT), 2.736p/kWh (exc. VAT)
Tier 1 applies to the first 1143kWh per quarter (or to first 12.53kWh/day average)
Tier 2 applies to all subsequent consumption
