I looked into all the capped tarrifs on the various comparison sites but they all gave me a result of paying upwards of 28% above what I am now. This is for elec alone.I tried the BG site as they are my supplier now and found the essentials tarrif. There is a list of 12 qualifying benefits ranging from DLA,child tax and working tax credits to housing or council tax benefits. We are in receipt of several so phoned 0800 072 7100.I was put on this tariff beginning today.I get 4.8% off my current prices,I pay by DD so still qualify for DD discount and the new price increases will not apply to me till April 2009. Getting us through the period when we use the most elec.I hope this helps others.

  • Thanks for the heads up

Only sad thing about this is its not common knowledge and obviously benefits those that need it most.

Also having spoken to bg today yes your prices will be fixed now but you still have to swallow the 35% increase from 2 days ago

Wish I had seen this info a few days ago.

Not so, the Essentials Tariff is remaining at the prices prior to the price increase until end ofApril 2009, anyone on the Essentials Tariff or who joins British Gas and is eligible for the tariff will get the prices prior to July 30 price increases.

Well just spoke to bg again and they say that anybody joining the Essentials Tariff today will be paying a higher rate for gas as in an extra 35% where as people that joined a few days ago before the price rises will not.

So are they telling me wrong ?

    Thanks Dutch

Theres only one Essentials Tariff, its not like Click where there are different levels or even Standard Prices where DD, Cash/Cheque and Mag Card costs are different, if you register for Essentials it is at the same price as it was 3 days, ago no increase in the tariff until April 2009 and that is not just for existing customers, or so I have been led to believe.

ive just phoned and registered for the essentials tarrif. lady told me i'd save 10.3% off gas and 4.8% off electricity.
When I get my letter confirming this it should show my DD's being reduced accordingly. I simply cant afford Gas @ 90/mth and Elec @ 168/mth any more.
I dont know howother MS'ers can have DD's of just £20 or less.
    :(

Right just phoned the billing line at bg and they are saying the same as you which is really good news :T so it seems if you move on the tariff at anytime the old prices stay :j

Have no idea why the people on the Essentials Tariff number are saying different and that the price increases will be added

    Thanks Dutch

Largely as the people on the Essentials team seem to be a bit behind, but yes Essentials tariff prices remain the same until April 2009 for new and existing customers.

I was on essentials tariff so I rang them up to see if there would be an increase and whether I need to renew it and lo and behold I was taken off the essentials tariff in January by mistake and have been paying full whack, anyway after apologies, they said they would be calculating my refund and getting back to me next week to arrange a refund.

I'm so glad I asked detailed questions as one lady said I was on it another said I wasn't and the third said I was and I asked how much I was paying exactly and then they noticed I was paying the standard tariff.

Spoke to EDF and 15% off and they said I would get the same if I went with them for gas, which I am considering as British Gas have made serious mistakes before and I don't trust them

shame thmes water don't give discounts unless you have more than 3 kid s or have a medical condition
