I was told that on the Gas Essentials Tariff you basically get the Direct Debit rate with a Tier 2 unit discount up to £12 per quarter however you pay as you don't need to be on Direct Debit.

Any price increase is postponed till April 2009, so you remain on old rates.

Gas Rates I was quoted were (excl. VAT):

    Tier 1: 4.192p/kWh
    Tier 2: 2.314p/kWh

Electric Essentials Tariff you basically get the Direct Debit rate with a Tier 2 unit discount up to £10 per quarter.

Again I assume you stay on old rates (I'm not on Electric with BG) & any price increase is postponed until April 2009.

I checked my last bill in May & that was a 33% increase on previous rates, even before latest massive increase !!

Ps: BG Essentials rates confirmed in a letter from British Gas.

I was on essentials tariff so I rang them up to see if there would be an increase and whether I need to renew it and lo and behold I was taken off the essentials tariff in January by mistake and have been paying full whack, anyway after apologies, they said they would be calculating my refund and getting back to me next week to arrange a refund.

I wonder how widespread this 'mistake' is, because looking at my mothers bills the same thing happened to her in January 08. It co-incided with a price increase and the reinstatement of the winter rebate in February 08 of £90 dual fuel, which had originally been scrapped when the essentials tariff was introduced in March 07.
She is back on the essentials tariff today, but can't help thinking it will be a nightmare getting a refund and whether She would have been entitled to the winter rebate if still on the essentials tariff.

    thanks for the reply

i have now put them on the gas essentials tariff, and was asked it i wanted to go electric as well but she didnt know what the tariff was and would get someone to ring back,
i dont want to be putting them on something costing more and wondered if it would be better than who they are with now scottish power.
