OK, I am not sure i am with everyone on this capping thing. We recently moved and are with 2 different suppliers paying each bill as it comes in and I need to switch.

Just logged onto SP website - I was initially going to cap but if I go for the 'Online discounted Energy' plan I can save 30% on my current annual bills. Plus there is no tie in. And if the prices rise another 30% I'll be paying the same as the capped rate is offering me now.

Well, I have taken the plunge since I started this email and I have gone over to Scottish Power but have NOT capped. I am taking the chance as my fuel has to rise by ANOTHER 30% to make it worth any saving.

I'm not with the whole capping thing but....

have you factored in the cost of a future SP increase? After all, they will put their prices up too!

Here is a radical idea, BG has kicked all of their customers in the teeth, why not get every customer who is with BG to switch to a different supplier,(most would benefit anyway and if using a switching site should receive £20-30 for switching), and see how BG manages without ANY customers!

Just an idea, but it would certainly give BG,(and other companies), food for thought.

Unlikely to happen, as BG has over 2 million customers. Plus, if energy companies ARE out to make a profit as people like yourself are saying, surely the company/companies that people all moved to would then increase their prices to make even bigger profits? Also, if prices really ARE going up due to the oil/gas price link in Europe, surely the other companies would then up their prices anyway?

I agree it is unlikely to happen, the British are never any good at this sort of thing,(I believe they have over 6 million customers according to a radio prog this morning).

They might not need to increase as much as they would be selling more fuel, supply and demand?

Other companies are putting them up, but not as much as BG, and as BG ARE making a profit, with no customers left they might start a drop in prices!

    Hi

I'm assuming you work for BG? Could I ask you something?

I know Click 5 haven't risen yet but, in your professional opinion, how much do you think they will rise by? 25%?

    And roughly when?

I only ask because I did the stoopid thing of switching over from EDF on sat. Have until tomorrow to cancel...

Trying to compare based on a forecast of rises for click energy at 25% for both fuel.

Your two pence worth would be appreciated very much!

Well, I wish I had a more definitive answer.

Click 5 is generally cheaper than the standard tariff, and looking at how prices have risen in the past it is very likely it will go up, perhaps a similar amount to the standard prices. It'll still be cheaper than the standard tariff, in my opinion, as that's a great 'selling point' for those that don't want to be 'locked in' by a cap (and Click 5 has no 'get out' charges). I would say your estimate is a good one. Standard prices went up 35% for gas and 9% for electricity, which equates to a 25% overall increase for British Gas dual fuel customers on the standard tariff...

If you want to use your cool-off period, go for it, however remember that EDF, nPower, Powergen, Scottish/Southern, etc. will probably all raise their prices in the next few weeks (once the dust that the media has kicked up has settled down a bit).

I think fuel bills are deliberately complicated to discourage you from working it out.

My scottishpower bill is split into random lengths with an average per day... utterly impossible to work out a years worth as there's gaps in it - but they know exactly how much I've used.

Here I am standing back in amazement at all the panic, much of it generated, with an almost religious fervour, by a few individuals. Get your act together folks and think objectively how you can cut your energy consumption without reducing your standard of living. It isn`t rocket science
