The way to check if a piece of land is an official country is to see if it has an ISO country code: http://www.iso.org/iso/en/prods-services/iso3166ma/02iso-3166-code-lists/list-en1.html

    You're welcome!
That is not an exhaustive list though!

There are some extra "countries" which fall between the cracks.

E.g. The Isle of Man is a soveregin counrty. British Acts of Parliament have no jurisdiction there, only the Manx Parliament does. However, their government pay our government in order for the Isle of Man to be considered part of the UK for the purposes of international relations.

It is a sovereign country, but not considered so by many lists (like yours).

I would use the CIA World Factbook website (although their list is, I accept, somewhat over-exhaustive!- e.g. the inclusion of Dhekelia)

Anyway, back to the scratch cards.

I've had one too and won a villa on one card, an undisclosed cash price on another and £1000 on another - sound familiar?!

Dahomey was an African country when I was a schoolgirl. I believe it still is.

Back to the original topic, I wonder how many hapless people fall for scams like these? Too tempting to ring up, even out of curiosity. They get an exciting talk that keeps them on tenterhooks for several minutes, and somebody in Dominica or the Martian Republic or perhaps even Aldershot, cashes in on the premium number.

There should be strict international laws against this sort of thing!

I am afraid Dahomey is no more . It is now called the Republic of Benin (not to be confused with the city of the same name in Nigeria) .

If any of these sort of offers were for real, the companies would be out of business within 6 months! I was recently phoned by a lovely man who told me I'd won a holiday to the Carribean. As you can guess my suitcase was half packed before he then told me I would have to pick up my tickets at a presentation weekend. Turns out I would have been sitting for 6-7... 16 hours getting nagged into a time share. Sorry bit off track, but just another reason to believe if something's to good to be true, it probably is.

I don't know what people are complaining about. I have won loads on these cards.

I've been on 25 cruises, and won 6 cars, 12 houses and over £750,000.

If you don't want the money from these generous people, don't reply.

  • Got one today in my Sky magazine

    3x£1,000 --- 3xVILLA'S --- 3xCASH

    I was gutted, I wanted the £100,000

Oh well, I'll have to play Deal Or No Deal

By the way BFG, If you are cruising round the world, or driving around in your 12 cars spending your £750,000 how the hell do you find time to become a regular money saver. You're not John Taylor, Accounts Manager by any chance.
