netgear rp614v2 router can't access internet/completely confused!

Went ahead and did the format ... still got problems! Noted what did and noticed:
Full format
Installed ZA and AVG and then turned them off ready to setup router. Modem installed fine. Plugged in router fine.
Reset router so could get into it's settings.
Changed password and upgraded firmware.
Looked at all router settings ...
Fixed IP detected (I understood Virgin Media's isn't fixed IP?).
The test to see if a netgear internet page opens fails.
Router status details ... internet port included MAC address, but no IP address, DHCP is Client, no subnet mask, no DNS. LAN port has a MAC address, an IP address, DHCP is Server, and has an IP subnet mask.
'Attached devices' includes an IP address, device name and MAC address.
There's a default DMZ server but last digit missing.
SPI enabled.
MTU 1500.
LAN TCP/IP setup has IP address and IP subnet mask.
'Use router as DHCP server' is checked, and the ranges given.
No address reservation.
No dynamic DNS service, and am offered DynDNS.com as a server.
No static routes.
No remote management.
uPnP isn't turned on.
Have also just done all updates, except the dodgy one earlier advised not to install. Will plug in router again to test, but, intuitively more than anything else!, could it be that the lack of ISP settings and DNS could be something to do with the problem?

I'm afraid I have never set up a cable connection, but I do have plenty of experience with routers.
Can you connect directly to the modem? I would assume that those settings are set by Virgin, if you haven't had a connection since it was NTL could this be the problem?
if you can get into the cable modem setup perhaps you could see what that says, and maybe set it to DHCP. As far as I understand it this is what needs to happen:
Cable modem connects to internet service and plugs into internet port on the router.
The cable modem should give the router an internal ip address for the internet connection, so some kind of dhcp should be set up on the cable modem.
Then when you use the router it will detect whether the internet connection is working.
Having never set this up before I don't think I can be of much more use
hopefully someone with more experience of cable connections can help further.

Sounds like you do not have an account with any ISP have you been paying for broadband/dialup?

Hi Cloister, much appreciate advice. Sorry, I think I didn't post clearly, as it was the router settings I was in. Router's directly connected with modem ... moved the ethernet modem cable from modem to internet port in router; then used ethernet cable to connect PC to one of the 4 ports on the router. No problem with internet connection if only the modem is plugged in; it's as soon as I swap the cables to include the router that I can't get into the internet. I've had internet all the time, same company just changed hands.

Hi, am a paying customer! I was saying it was the router I'd just decided to use again, and that there's no problem with the internet when only usual modem plugged in. Don't get why elsewhere on the net I see that Virgin doesn't assign a static IP yet my router settings say it looks like my IP is fixed.

Once it has been reset get the router to re-detect the internet settings and it should come back fine. either that or you could be looking at a fault with the router.

Hi Cloister, many thanks for advice. I had done that, as in my confused dotting about the manual trying to get my head around all the stuff, lol, I'd seen that it was advised to reset. Hoping there's not a fault with the router, but it has been lying in a drawer for a year or so, might have aged!

Hi jpe20, thanks for advice ... done it just now and will do best to explain it, lol ... primary dns is completely blank; node type is unknown; IP routing isn't enabled; WIN proxy isn't enabled.
Ethernet adaptor Local Area Connection is blank. DHCP is enabled, as is autoconfiguration [if only!]. 2 IP addresses with a subnet mask also. Default gateway is there. There's a DHCP server listed, and DNS servers. NetBIOS over Tcpip is disabled. And there's a note saying 'lease obtained 31 July 2008' and EXPIRES (!?) 5th August 2008 at 5.55.
Tunnel adaptor Teredo Tunnelling Pseudo-Interface has no connection-specific DNS suffix. DHCP isn't enabled. Default Gateway is blank. NetBIOS over tcpip is disabled.
Tunnel adaptor 6to4 Tunnelling Pseudo-Interface has no connection-specific DNS suffix and no DHCP enabled either. It has an IP address, default gateway and DNS servers, but NetBIOS tcpip is disabled.
Tunnel adaptor Automatic Tunnelling Pseudo-Interface doesn't have a connection-specific DNS suffix or DHCP enabled. It has an IP address, but no default gateway. It has DNS servers, and NetBIOS over tcpip is disabled.
Phew! (and very little idea what most of it means!)
