netgear rp614v2 router can't access internet/completely confused!

Options
Hi, just about tearing my hair out with this! Used to use router, when Virgin Media broadband was ntl, no problem. Just decided to use it again, but can't get it to access the internet. I can go into the router's settings, but am lost with what I'm doing, what to set up in XP Pro, whether to let it do dynamic or static, whether Virgin does dynamic or static, do I need Virgin details to put into the settings ... ????? When I'm in the router's settings, I can't get it to test positive by opening the netgear page.

Basically I can't recall how I set it up before, so can anyone give me a really baby-level guide as to what to setup, particularly regarding XP Pro, which I didn't have before, if that makes a difference?

Many thanks, Cat

If your computer can connect to the router, then that's the hard part done. All you should have to enter is your username and password. Leave everything else set to automatic if you aren't sure what you're doing.

My first question here would be - Are you using Cable or is it ADSL?

When you said you used to use the router, what were you using in the mean time - a modem?

Do you still have your broadband login details?

  • Are you using Zone Alarm as a firewall if so check to see if the latest service updates from Microsoft for XP has not killed it.
Switch off ZA (Make sure that Windows Firewall is switched on) and try to do an automatic setup
Other hangups can be AVG or Norton denying access
Both can be turned off in the short term
Look for the router address which should look something like http://192.168.16.0.1 (That will be in the Netgear setup manual)
Finally if you do get it to connect make sure that you set up the WPA encryption so that the World and its Dog cannot use your router

Sounds like you have a cable connection, do you have a cable modem plugged into the router in the internet socket? As the router is just a router and will require a modem for you to access the internet.

Hi, it's cable, and yes I've been using the same trusty old ntlworld modem. With the Virgin changeover, only had phone contact, kept same equipment etc. Router was fine with modem before. I have my email address and password ... only login details I know to date, and am unsure if these are the details I need to enter into the router's settings page.

    Cheers, Cat

Hi, am using both ZA and AVG. I can get into the router's settings page, but am not sure how to set up WPA encryption so world and dog can't get in! Unsure what settings to do, in router settings and XP, to ensure it can all communicate. Really thrown off, as didn't have this faff on when used same modem and router before. All that's changed is it's Virgin Media broadband now, and I use a higher spec machine, and XP Pro. Can't get why such problems, lol.

Hi, yes I have the cable modem and router all plugged in, all the right lights on on both. (Router showed port found once I did something ... can't recall what as have fiddled on with so many things!)

I have to agree with macitems.... Apparently a recent win xp security update interferes with older versions (unupdated) of Zone Alarm. This has caused lots of internet connection dropping issues. Just update ZA and this may fix your hassle. I would lose web connection yet the wireless connection appears fine in the systray and I would be able to access the router home page!!! Still road testing this possible fix but all appears fine so far. Another 12-25 hrs of reliability testing to go!!!!

Thanks jpe20, much appreciate. I'd just done a format, so have very little to back up ... had just decided to reformat and see if windows updates are the culprit, so great minds think alike! Haven't been updating ZA, so will have a go at setting up router before any Windows updates downloaded, see if the router problem is solved, then hopefully all that's left is to update ZA!
