You know it belongs to her. Keeping it is both morally and legally theft.

I would not keep the ticket.

Despite the fact that the ticket is not mine, the chances of being able to claim a large prize is minimal. There are over 100 security checks on a winning lottery ticket, and one of them is: "Where and when did you buy the ticket?"

It is true to say that you could claim a smaller prize, but I personally could not spend money I knew I'd robbed from a old lady.

I'd find her and give her the ticket.
  • No way, but I have to admit that I'd be tempted. I'd respond to my compulsive, annoying honesty and run after the woman, hoping that some of her winnings might come my way. But then, if they did, would I listen to my inconvenient pride and refuse. . .?

I always wonder what the general world is like to people who answer these 'dilemmas'. I tend to think that people in general are actually quite nice and have found that to be the case - I would of course give the ticket back with no hesitation.

Do people who would keep the ticket find the world a nastier place than I do and assume that most people would 'do' them over so they might as well get in first?

    Same here!
(even if it meant waiting at the exit doors for her to emerge.)
    .
There's probably not a single shopping centre in the world with only one exit door

Come on folks. Be honest. How many of you who said you would keep the winning ticket would winge like hell at the dishonesty of others if THEY had lost a winning ticket and somebody else had walked off with the cash.
Well not Northernlass, who is probably the only person here experienced enough to answer - and who gave a very refreshing answer :T (taking it on the chin for her own carelessness) (sad fact is those 5 numbers probably weren't claimed, who would bother to check the numbers on a discarded ticket, you would just think it is litter)
  • I can honestly say I wouldn't keep it. I was in Weymouth Asda last week and had used the self-checkout counters when I noticed a fiver had been left in the 'change' slot by a previous customer. I immediately gave it in to one of the customer service staff who kept it by and made a note in a log-book. How would I have felt if I'd left that fiver and somebody swiped it?

I might try it out at the weekend. Find a load of losing tickets, pretend to call someone up, tell them I've won the lottery and accidentally on purpose drop the ticket in front of someone.

So what would you do if you had left a fiver on the last visit (and someone presumably took it), and then found a fiver the next time you visited?

Given it inside a birthday card.

Why is she an old lady all of a sudden? What if the woman was a brash young woman, bragging about winning to her mates on the phone and saying how she was going to go out and get completely plastered on the winnings?
  • I would be totally honest and keep the ticket, my mortgage with Northern Rock has increased by £480 a month, I am in arrears and I have several utility companies on my back for money.
I am in negative equity, cant re-mortgage , though God only knows I have tried!
However I would give some of the money to charity. If you have a winning lottery ticket, you look after it! Don`t rub other peoples nose in it, especially in a shopping centre.
