Something to note when buying RAM, it works fastest in pairs. 2x512Mb sticks will be faster than 1x1Gb stick. Not sure on how much they will cost, though.
Also of importance is the type. Most RAM is either DDR or DDR2 (Though I think some laptops may use a different type). These aren't compatable with each other, but again, the crucial site should say if your current ram is DDR or DDR2, so that will show you which to get.
If you are planning on upgrading to vista, you may want to consider 2x1Gb, as the 2Gb of ram will be helpful, as Vista can be sluggish with only 1Gb.

Thanks iviv, just checked on Crucial and it's DDR PC3200 memory I have. Sorry, I should have said the price I quoted before was for 2 x 512 sticks. Was good to run the Vista test on the Crucial site too. 2gb'd be a lot better ... costs £50 on Crucial.

    Many thanks, Cat

DDR memory is getting on a bit now, and I think it may have gone out of production, so prices are going to be slowly rising, since its been superseded by DDR2 memory.
You can buy memory direct from crucial, but its best to check around. https://www.overclockers.co.uk https://www.dabs.com and https://www.ebuyer.com are the main hardware vendors in the UK, you may get a better deal with them.

Thanks iviv, didn't know that the DDR is going out. Noticed the Corsair 1gig kit on Dabs ... and even the Crucial 2 x 512 kit is way cheaper too! Can buy 2gig of Corsair memory for the price of the 1gig kit on Crucial's actual site.

    Cheers, Cat
