how backup all xp microsoft updates

Options
Hi, had been looking into upgrading to Vista but just found out it needs 2gb RAM! I have 512 RAM./

Am wanting to ask how to backup all xp security fixes from now on, as I understand microsoft aren't going to be providing all the security updates and service packs for XP from next April? Know I'm a bit ahead of time, lol, but just for peace of mind, wanting to ask where all the fixes are located on the drive so I can group them as I go along and then put them onto disk.

I've just downloaded sp3 which seems fine, through microsoft updates, but when I've gone to look for where I can download sp3 to put on disk, the option is a network pack over 300meg big and Microsoft's note is to not download it for a single user computer, but to go through the updates site, which is what I've already done, to download the express version. Don't know where that express version download is on the drive in order to back it up to disk!

And also where Office fixes are located too!
Many thanks, Cat

Download the 300MB standalone pack and save it to disc.

That way should you wish to re-install windows you have SP3 there ready and waiting to put on.

You could slipstream SP3 into XP and create a 'backup' copy of your genuine windows XP disc, however this time with SP3 already built-in.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

you may want to consider useing firefox and windizupdates , makes a folder called updates that you can save to a cd later.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

You may also like to consider Slipstreaming a CD. Essentially, you copy your XP CD to your computer, download the full 300Mb SP3 download, and give windows a command to join them together. You can then burn it all to a CD and you'll have a bootable, fully functioning CD that will install XP with SP3.

Many thanks aviv, I hadn't registered properly about slipstreaming earlier, hadn't known could do that! Many thanks for the link. Looks really straightforward ... will look forward to doing that. Cheers again, Cat

Just a quick aside, the end of support for winxp simply means ms won't be doing any new updates for it.
They will still be available on the windows update for some time after, Windows ME still updates via the web!

Hi mdbarber, I hadn't realised that ... learning a lot through this thread! Thanks for letting me know. If WinME is still updating, WinXP updates'll be around for ages yet then, lol! Best regards, Cat

Vista doesn't need 2GB RAM. It will run on 512MB but you really want 1GB. I've just purchased a 1GB stick for a laptop, which is more expensive than desktop memory, for a customers Dell and it cost the grand total of £15.30 including delivery. And it's Crucial as well so it has a no quibble money back guarantee with lifetime warranty.

Thanks Conor, had no idea memory was that cheap! Can afford that no problem. Great to know that Crucial does such a good service. Many thanks. May I ask what Crucial memory is best for a Dell Dimension 1100 desktop?

    Cheers, Cat
