If you go to the Crucial site, It'll do it for you!

Thanks Lord Gardener, what an impressive site Crucial is ... hadn't had time to look it up until now, but just have and it's great. Thanks for the link! Will look forward to purchasing from there when it's needed. Cheers, Cat0

You may want to hold back from buying direct from Crucial. Remember to shop around, sites such as overclockers.co.uk dabs.com and ebuyer.com should sell the same ram.
The brand doesn't really matter too much, any should be good. Just don't buy the own brand value stuff that some stores sell. The main thing to look for is the speed. This will be shown in two ways, either as a PCxx00 number, or in Mhz. For instance, PC6400 is 800Mhz. Faster ram will be, obviously, faster. Though in the real world, there's not much difference.
Also, check out the warranties. Some companies may offer longer ones.0 -
Thanks iviv. I'd had no idea what RAM to get, and lastnight had been relieved Crucial clearly points to which RAM etc! Thanks for recommendations about other sites and what to buy ... will definitely look it up and much appreciate advice.

There are many flavours of RAM, one strip of 1 GB RAM could be totally different to the next strip and wouldn't work. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Thanks for both messages ... plus pre-empted question I had! Had been wondering if 1gig would be a good choice, but is the 512 ram in my machine (Dell Dimension 1100 desktop) in 2 slots or one ... is it 2 x 256's, so need to buy a 1gig kit?
Best regards, Cat0 -

If/when you run the Crucial Scanner, it will tell you, how much RAM you have, the number of pieces, the number of slots, the maximum size you can use in any one slot and how many slots are free.
P.S.An easy way to slipstream is to use nLite 1.4.5, it guides you through the process by requiring you to browse to the relevant folders. No need for command lines.
Read the step by step guide available from the Home page.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Many thanks spud17, great advice ... just checked on Crucial and have 2 x 256. Hadn't noticed about the slots when briefly looked at it before! Good price for the 1gig kit. And thanks very much for the link to nlite ... reading through the guide it looks ideal.

Something to note when buying RAM, it works fastest in pairs. 2x512Mb sticks will be faster than 1x1Gb stick. Not sure on how much they will cost, though.
Also of importance is the type. Most RAM is either DDR or DDR2 (Though I think some laptops may use a different type). These aren't compatable with each other, but again, the crucial site should say if your current ram is DDR or DDR2, so that will show you which to get.
If you are planning on upgrading to vista, you may want to consider 2x1Gb, as the 2Gb of ram will be helpful, as Vista can be sluggish with only 1Gb.0
