I'm with ntl and I sent an email to pennyphone to confirm that it was 1p per minute and here is my email and their reply:

Thank you very much for your interest in our offer.

We inform you that you do not pay any extra charge on top of PennyPhone
rate, except for a connection fee of 5p charged by NTL.
We will be grateful if you could spread the word around you.

Likewise we would appreciate if you could let us know how did you hear about
us (i.e. websites, friends, family, colleagues, etc) ?

    Best regards,
    Your PennyPhone-team

    Hi,
I have seen your Diwali offer and hope to take advantage.
However the contact number 08447214721 is not listed on ntls tariff
guide and their support are were unable to help me. Do you know what ntl
will charge for use of this nmuber, is it also 1p/min?
    Thanks,

In fact I also asked ntl and they initially stated that it would 15p/min but I told them that it was being advertised at 1p/min and they then said that if they are advertising that price then it is possible that this is what you could get. I never gave them the whole number, I just said that it was a 08447 number. I'm still not convinced by Pennyphone as nowhere in their reply do they confirm in writing my query about the 1p/min claim. Instead they start going on about extra charges not being added to the Pennyphone rate which I think is a red herring. Another thing which I find odd, considering that the business they are in, is that they do not have a contact phone number on their website.
It may be all above board but who is to say that just because you are told by the automated response the cost is 1p/min, you won't get charged 15p/min?

"Please spread the word so that we may make as much money out of this scam as possible."

I would point out that it isn't possible to make a profit on these calls - long distance for 1p per minute? Come on! Open your eyes! I hope Martin exposes this or at least warns people about it in the next email tip! :money:

Pennyphone hasn't worked for me despite several tries; it keep saying in an automated message that my destination ( Calcutta, India) is not available on this number, they are providing an alternative one which charges 8p/min. False advertising at best, crooks at worst. I would not touch these people with a bargepole, they seem to have blurred the line between fact and fiction.
  • Works fine for me, 1p/min.

Wait until you get your bill then we'll know if it really is 1p/min. Sadly by then the offer will probably ended.

I checked my BT bill online, after making some calls, and sure enough, it is costing only 1p/min. Looks like there's a 4p connection charge though.
  • Do we have an update on this yet? If it is a scam I hope it is in the email before Martin sends it out :D

  • THIS APPEARS TO BE GIMMICK. HAVING CONNECTED TO 0844 721 4721, AND THEREAFTER TO THE NUMBERS IN INDIA I HELD THE PHONE FOR NEARLY THREE MINUTES, WITHOUT ANY RESPONSE. I REALLY WONDER WHETHER THIS IS TRUE?

Update Note: 1 November Some people below have reported it's not working for them. Please reply to this thread to let us know, saying which phone provider you have. Thanks.

The following is a press relese from Pennyphone about Divali. It's a nice offer. Of course Pennyphone isn't always cheapest - please use the non-commercial www.moneysavingexpert.com/callchecker to check whether the special access number below does provide the cheapest price to the destination you're calling. Please make sure you use that one to get the 1p per minute and NOT the numbers on the callchecker

Like the other providers there you can access Pennyphone without an account and without changing phone provider

    Dear Sir/Madam,

The most popular and most celebrated festival of India is coming soon. It is Diwali, the festival of lights. In such a time of joy and happiness, togetherness and blessings, pennyphone helps you get closer to your near and dear ones.

Hence, pennyphone is offering from the 31st October onwards calls to any landline or mobile in India for only 1p/min via the access number 0844 721 4 721. The special offer of 1p/min is also extended to many other destinations around the world where Diwali is celebrated:

Thailand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Kenya, Australia, Nepal, Tanzania, Indonesian, Suriname, Japan, Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore, Mauritius, Myanamar, Guyana and Fiji.

With best wishes for a Happy Diwali!
