Hi everyone we had a roast chicken with salad and buttered bread for tea last night (basically build your own butties) this is a favourite of my OH. He loves cold chicken. Have carved the rest of the meat off. Not a bad quantity for a small chicken and made stock with the bones. Our dog even had a fair quantity of jelly, skin and meat on her dry dog food. Can anyone tell me how to make the stock into a soup? I have cabbage, potato, carrot, celery and onion in stock?

Hi all, hope everyone's having a good day. I have been reading my book in the conservatory - for once, it has been dry enough to put the washing outside instead of on the maiden in the conservatory, so I thought I'd better make the most of there being enough room for me to sit in there :D Rain has come back now though, so washing is back inside (but nearly dry, so hopefully it won't have to hang around inside all weekend)

Had soup for lunch today. Well, I almost had soup for lunch. We had 2 tins in the cupboard of a name brand and a flavour I used to eat a lot. OH and I decided to have it for lunch, I had a couple of spoonfulls and decided I really don't like it anymore and couldn't eat it. It's nowhere near as nice as the soup I've been making myself (and run out of). So I am not going to buy any more tinned soup - I am going to check my recipes, stock up on ingredients and make a load of HM stuff to go in the freezer instead :D (The tinned stuff didn't get wasted tho, hollow-legged OH soon polished it off!)

I agree, its much nicer, cheaper, and often healthier too, to make your own.
Lets hope people post some nice winter soup recipes on here. Right off to make my crumble.

Lol. No, I have not kidnapped a damsel in distress and made her stand in the conservatory, holding the wet washing :rotfl: It's one of those airer thingies you hang your wet washing on. I've always known it as a maiden, but that is possibly a northern-ism

Yep, just googled it and it appears they are known as "maiden" up north and "clothes horses" down south. (cheers carolt2, you just beat me to it :))

No wonder OH used to look at me like I was a crazy woman when I asked him to get the maiden out of the cupboard - he's learnt a whole new language since he met me! :p

Right, I've finally caught up on the thread - I catch up on a load of different thread reading and come back to pages and pages for the GC :rotfl:

Hey Scotsaver which did you prefer out of Woolwich and Dartford markets, in terms of price or quality? Did you get F&V, was there a meat stall that you saw? They're both similar distances from me (7 miles) but I hate taking the car to Woolwich and it's two buses from here. I'll make the effort though if it's worth it. I'd be interested to hear what you think, if you wouldn't mind. (And my toms are outside and are reaaaalllllyyyy slow this year)

Sashanut so glad your kitty came back safely! I thought mine was lost the other day and I looked all over the garden for him. I was starting to go into a bit of a flap and drag DH outside to look for him when said puss cat came out from under the table in the other room, wondering why I was flapping. DH had let him in and not told me... I wouldn't be without either of them though ;) Sorry to those others who've lost kitties lately, it seems a bad month for it (((hugs)))

MrsMc bargain on the bread flour!

My sig is completely up to date, NSD for me today. I haven't kept track of those this month, I should really. With any luck there's another two NSDs to come before I go shopping again on Tuesday, but I might need milk on Monday... I'm not declaring until next Sunday though! And I *really* need to start planning meals!

Have a good weekend all :) (((hugs)))

It has been a while since I have made one but I'd remove as much fat as you can from the top of the stock, then make your soup as usual (ie: fry onion in oilive oil, add other ingredients inc garlic, spices/salt/pepper), then add the stock and maybe more water if needed. Just make sure the ingredients that need cooking longer are similar size chunks. A dash of white wine may go nicely too... some lentils, or rice also pad it out (depending on how many potatoes you were going to add) :T

Got some great BOGOF from Tesco online on Cheerios which MrEL goes through. Plus Somerfield have Cathedral City cheddar half price at £2 for 400g, they also have Ginsters Cornish pasties BOGOF.

I tidied a small cupboard we have and managed to put linen in there and make it more useful and acessible, plus got a metal cupboard riser to put inside a cupboard, to make 2 levels instead of one sort of thing. Works very well!

It sounds like everyone has done really well this month. I've not spent much on food this week, I'm shocked at how little we've spent actually.

I feel guilty as I've thrown away a few veg, normally I make sure nothing goes to waste but since I've a two week old baby I'll use her as my excuse. :rotfl:

I made two Weetabix loaves today, one for us and one to take to my parents house. I forgot how yummy it is and so cheap to make.

I was going to get bread from Tesco Express tomorrow but I've realised that I have some Hovis bread mix so I'll do that instead. We are at a wedding tomorrow but I'll need to give the children an early lunch otherwise they'll be starving waiting for the meal, DS is so grumpy if he isn't fed often! I am going to take a bag full of snacks for them both too.
Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!
