Thanks for all that Andreandreboyle wrote:Somewhere else on this forum is a link to a relatively cheap netgear wireless media player, this type of setup will work well with that as well to extend your audio files to your stereo, etc.
Just my thrupenny bit's worth.
Are you referring to this http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=106541
Do you mean that you could use this in conjunction with a modded xbox or as an alternative ?
Have you soft-modded your box or installed a chip?
Sorry for all the questions but I don’t quite understand the difference between how you are streaming video/audio and the video streaming server that you describe. Any chance of clarifying it a little for me?
Thanks again – if I can get my xbox modded then I may be taking you up on your offer of advice : )
Many thanks0 -
Yeah, that's the media player I was talking about.
However, it's good for music but not video. There are other devices which can be used for video. Hauppage did one which was cheap the last time PC World botched their prices over a year ago.
I was suggesting the media player to be used as well as the XBOX. If you follow my way of going down the digital media route then you store your media centrally and access it from multiple locations, including these small media players.
Personally I think £50 is a little pricey for the netgear media player as it only does audio. However, I know from experience that it's a great bit of kit.
On the advice note, feel free to ask. I'll PM you my personal details so you can get in touch by eMail when necessary.
Dre... and that's all I have to say about that.0 -
Amazon are currently doing a Cyberhome DVD/DivX/Xvid player for £40 + free delivery.
CyberHome -DVD 401 - DVD Player Silver (MPEG4)
Its good to see players supporting xvid as well.0 -
MikeT wrote:The only thing I have had problems with is the video size on some d/loaded files.
The player will play a max size of 720x576 @ 25fps or 720x480 @ 30fps
Some d/l files are 960x528 @23fps and all you get is sound only. Fine for the pc but not the divx player.0 -

Personally, I'd avoid that.... many unfavourable comments here:

Unless it says so, assume that the player does not support Packed Bitstream. Most Xvids encoded since early 2005 have packed bitstream in them because the xvid v1 software has it switched on by default.
I would go as far as saying that PBS support is the single most important factor in determining which divx player to buy.0 -
Well of the 60+gigs of xvid stuff I have thrown at the Asda player in the last week, non of the files refused to play sound so I guess as these are all very recent files that this player supports packed bitstream.
The only trouble I had which I already mentioned was with 960x528 res files.
I only have a few of these and Virtualdub has reduced them to 720x576 without problems and they too now play fine.
Overall I am happy with the playerAll Dell'd upseveral times over

I put a mix of mp3's and d/loaded avi files on a 1Gig sd card today and tried that in the player, it worked fine with the mp3's and the avi clips of 40mins length played flawlessly. I was able to fast forward and reverse too though it did take a second to resync sound and picture once I got where I wanted.
The only downside I could find was there isnt a button on the remote to select the play input, so you do have to push a button on the player to select card 1 or 2 or disc, no biggy really. All Dell'd upseveral times over

NickA wrote:Anyone any ideas if this player will recognise a DVD-R with say 4-5 xvid files on and give you the option of which one to play?
Just trying to establish how it could do that? (I get 2 DVD's each week with around 4-6 xvid files on so this player could appeal to me)
Cheers
