Asda Divx DVD Player

  • For the ultimate divx player for a TV, then you need a modded Xbox - with the right software, it will play any type of media apart from RATDvd.

Apart from that get a Pioneer, Philips or Yamada. No need to go through the hassle of unpacking PBS xvid files.

Its not that much of a hassle to be honest considering my player cost me £37, looks good and plays everything. Anyway unpacking the files is a doddle especially compared to the bother I used to have encoding video to vcd/svcd/kvcd.

Though I have always been interested in modding my xbox so I can play my media files through that. Sorry to go O.T. Machofairy, but am I right in thinking that with a wireless game adapter and the right software you can make it into a wireless media server able to browse and play the files on your PC?

When choosing a Divx/Xvid player, and you intend to play "downloaded" files, it is vital that the player supports "packed bitstream" files. Without that support, you will find that at least 50% of the files you play will be jerky.

    DVDs should play fine though.
I think some people on this thread do not understand that there is a difference between dvd and divx. Most DVD players will play vcd, mp3, mpeg1, svcd, kvcd, skvcd, mvcd. However, you have to pay extra for the divx feature.

Most standalone Divx player do not support Packed Bitstream. If you intend to watch downloaded TV progs from USA, then most files will be jerky. I think that the Asda one does NOT support PBS, from what I have read elsewhere.

Even the Yamada 6700 does NOT support PBS out of the box. However, if you upgrade it with unofficial firmware, you will find it plays most files flawlessly.

Hiya could you advise which firmware to download pls?

    Cheers :)

Happiness is wanting what you have, not having what you want.

    Primum non noce!
  • For Xbox, in my experience, wireless streaming of media files does not work well ... choppy and pauses frequently. I never seem to get full and constant speed through wifi. So, I just transfer the files via a DVDRW disc from PC to Xbox.

If you do have to use streaming on XBMC, use VideoLAN:

Quixy ... if you have the Yamada, use New Age's v3A firmware. Google it but make you read the iinstructions carefuly of you end up with a dead player!

As we are off-topic, just got my xbox with an executer 3 chip and managed to get all up and running. Have to admit that mine is ethernet hard wired into my hub, but I just drag and drop my movies onto the 200gb hard drive fitted into it

Mad-dog - have you ever tried streaming video or music? Looking around the internet it seems possible and theoretically it shouldn’t really matter if your network is wired or not as long as it's stable. I’m really interested to find out because I’m tempted to buy a wireless media player and if I can convert my xbox for less then that would be peachy (and loads more useable)

    Hi Quixy,
    The firmware needed is HERE

NOTE: This firmware is unofficial and you MUST follow the instructions to the letter.
  • Hi all,

I have an XBOX configured with the leatest release of XBMC which is, in my opinion, the best media player for the XBOX.

In order to stream media to the XBOX using a wireless link you'll want it to be 22MB or above. This will be suitable for XVID and DivX content. If you're streaming DVD content in MPEG2 format then you'll need a fatter bit of bandiwdth and 54MB will be what you're after as a minimum.

The wireless adapter that I use is the Netgear wireless network adapter, however any wireless bridge device will suffice. So if you're not brand fussy then you shouldn't have any issues doing this 'on the cheap' which should be between 20 and 30 pounds off eBay.

If you're experiencing shoppy video then you've got latency and network consistency issues. I'd suggest repositioning your wireless kit and probably changing the channel to avoid other wireless network conflicts.

If you're getting choppy audio files then you've got waaaaay big networking issues as this is so low bandiwdth that choppy transfers point to serious network issues.

If anyone needs any assistance with setting up XMBC then please let me know and I will help any way that I can.

In terms of suggesting a video streaming server, this does work but pushes a lot of the work out to your PC and makes your ultimate solution less flexible. I'd suggest sorting out the wireless network and taking advantage of the codecs already installed on your XBOX.

I've recently encoded all of our 250+ DVDs onto a network server which is nice because I can now view movies/audio on the TV in the living room, any of the PCs in the house or my laptop in the Garden (If I'm feeling like sitting in the cold! :) ).

Another advantage is that when I'm away on business I cna simply take a bunch of my movies and audio from the network and watch themin my hotel room.

Somewhere else on this forum is a link to a relatively cheap netgear wireless media player, this type of setup will work well with that as well to extend your audio files to your stereo, etc.

    Just my thrupenny bit's worth.
... and that's all I have to say about that.
