Hi Billy
I dont know quite how I managed it, but I rang Coop last week to get an up to date balance ( internet can be a bit slow to update), and they offered me a mini cash ISA. I told the girl on the phone I was an undischarged bankrupt, and she was like "that's ok, we're not bothered"!!
I was a bit surprised to be honest but they said the account would be open in 48 hours. I dont have enough surplus to save right now, but reading the problems people have I thought Id take it while I could.
Don't know if Coop are just flogging ISAs to anyone, or I got a rogue banking person, but I did reiterate I was bankrupt more than once and they still said it was ok.0 -
Speechless! :money:They'll be offering you a mortgage next! Reckon that everything is so f****d that we're just about the only untapped customers they have left. BL0

Hi Dodecanese
I tried for this when I was discharged, the Co-Op said on the phone it should be OK but 2 days later I got a letter saying no, after leaving a mark on my credit file. I'll be interested to know if it all goes through OK. Remember if you do use it be careful as Debt Doctor said above, the OR may, just may, take an interest it. Do let us know what happens.0 -
Hi
The Coop girl said they dont credit check, they "put it through and it says yes or no". She said it had said yes- and it is there on the online banking.
I do wonder if she made a mistake and I got it by accident or if they'll close it down at some point. She did mention "upgrading" the basic account but dropped that idea sharpish when I pointed out my financial status (or non status, rather).
Im not intending using it at the moment- Im so skint Im lucky if Ive got a pound left at the end of the month.0 -

I am br and was able to open a savings account with NS&I in the post office. They dont do a credit check but they do ask that you have a bank acc so they can do an identity check.
You need to open it with £100 and you are not allowed a balance under that
Hope that helps

Hi folks, we've been away. Anyway it seemed like a good idea to do the above. Applied online and when it got to the part where it wanted my debit card number (for first deposit) it wasn't having any of it. Twice. Phoned their number and got a very polite chap who very apologetically told me their system couldn't handle Visa Electron. He couldn't say why, though. So it looks like off to the PO with cash in an envelope. But why a government-run website savings portal can't handle the card is beyond me. Grouch over.

Billy_Liar wrote: »So after digging around the threads it seems that virtually no-one will give an undischarged BR a savings account, which baffles me, but I can't be bothered ranting about it. Has anyone got any idea about a way of setting money aside (until post BR tax affairs are sorted out) that doesn't involve hiding cash under the bed or in a friend's attic? I don't care if it doesn't make a cent in interest, just want to ring-fence a certain amount of money away from the day to day account. Am even considering asking the co-op if they'll give me a second cashminder. If I scratch my head any more my hair will fall out. Any useable ideas - in fact any ideas at all - get a Lidl rum and lime alcopop at the Inn (79p on special offer yesterday!). Ta, BL
Hi Billy,
If you are not bothered about interest get some National Saving Premium Bonds,it would be better if you could put them in a family members name just in case you hit the jackpot. What about national savings products???.

Is there a problem with Nationwide offering accounts to bankrupts now? I had no problem last year.
Scoot they stopped offering accounts to BR and the end of last year. There was a period of several months before where they didn't seem to know what was happening and some were lucky and got one while others were turned down being told they didn't offer accounts to BR's.
The only 2 bank accounts now are the Co-op cashminder and Barclays cash account.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -
How about a childs savings account with your local credit union??
I know our local one only keeps details in their office, nothing on your credit file.
Don't know if these can be traced in any way apart from if the financial people do a check on the files at any point. Not been in our local office yet.BSC No: 186 There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Unless someone's nicked the candle !
