Newly single/retired so I have to pull my belt in - no more twice yearly foreign travel for now. However like many others I've discovered a certain 'news' paper does cheap breaks throughout UK. I've tried a couple, don't have to take part in the entertainment on site and have seen some beautiful parts of UK I'd never thought to visit in the past.
The weather may not always be perfect but I've found plenty to do. Seen a couple of films, eaten in several ethnic restaurants, visited a bird sanctuary, been to some local agricultural shows...all things I'd not have done had I been sitting on an overcrowded foreign beach, effluent pouring into the sea, among lobster red bodies scoffing fish'n'chips and throwing up all over the place. Brits on holiday in UK don't act like that so it's local breaks for me, for now.
(I do carry 'that' newspaper home in a bag though, don't want my neighbours to think I've sunk that far down in the world!:rotfl: )0 -

Excellent post!
One hotel you may like to try is this..
http://www.appletreehotel.com/
I've heard exceptionally glowing reviews about their standard of service.
Personally, I had a lovely stay at this hotel towards the end of last year

For a very reasonable rate, you can spend the afternoon in the spa then curl up with tea and scones beside an huge fireplace. Plus, this hotel does themed event weekends such as mini German Beer festivals and BBQ weekends. For such a vast hotel it manages to feel very homely.0 -
While I know many people enjoy camping/caravaning, given the choice of those I would also stay at home .. I do not do second class accomodation.bringmeshoes wrote: »One of the reasons I go on holiday is to get away from the UK so no chance of me holidaying here!
If the choice was holiday in a tent or a caraven or not go at all I would choose not to go away at all!!
In a holiday I want weather, to be waited on, to meet people and to enjoy other peoples culture and food. I can only get one of those in this country.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
Hiya, we tend to go abroad every two years for a two week break. Last year we went to Lanzarote so this year it is the uk. We are very lucky to have a relitive with a house by the sea - so had a long weekend with them. September we have booked a mid week break to Dorset in Devon. I found a caravan park that will take dogs. ( We have 1 large puppy). Soooo plenty of Free healthy walks!!!!!If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
Spring begins on 21st March.0 -
We tend to do both if we can - 1 abroad and 1 camping.
We enjoy the camping. The freedom to do what you want when you want. Not restricted to meal times.
The only down side for me is when you've had a few glasses and need to get up for a wee in the night the toilets always seem miles away :rolleyes:It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice0 -
We took up camping about 5 years ago, so we would be able to go away more with the children. We usually go on holiday abroad every year as well but I'm not sure we will be able to afford it next year.
If we always holidayed in the UK I would miss the foreign aspect, and I love the fact my children always pick up a couple of new words each time (usually go to Turkey) but I do think more families will stay at home and holiday in the UK over the next few years.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
We'd normally go off to Brittany for a week or so, but the euro/pound exchange rate has made it much more expensive for eating out, drinks etc The ferries also seemed much pricier for the longer crossings, plus petrol prices...all in all it just added up to way more than we wanted to pay.
So on Sunday we're off to Wales instead :T going to Cardiff first then a few days around the Gower and a couple in Pembrokeshire. Really looking forward to it and hoping for nice weather.
gorgeous parts of Wales and Cardiff is a fab city too
have a fab time, hope the weather is good for you !

We have always holidayed in the UK and love our countryside/seaside - however I hate how unreliable our weather is and I hate the fact that it costs more on a campsite here than is does abroad! Last year we did two weeks in North Wales on a tight budget - campsite cost £600 ish (caravan + hook up - 2 adults, 2 teens and 1 child) and we spent about £450 including food and petrol) - this was really controlled spending and no "extras" and we took food with us. The weather was awful but we still had a good time. This year we're off on a coach holiday to Spain for a fortnight, after two consecutive soggy summers we needed some sun! Missing the caravan but looking forward to taking summer clothes and knowing we will wear them! (Although knowing our luck they will have freak freezing with in Spain while we're there - lol).I stopped smoking 25th June 2007STILL Never complacent but confidentMy debt is GOING DOWN!!!!0

Thanks for this Blue, looks excellent for a weekend break - who'd a thought Leeds for a holiday? And no wurries if the weather isn't good, penty on offer there. (Bet their morning paper isn't the one I mentioned previously :rotfl: ).
We just don't see what's under our noses sometimes..:rolleyes:0
