Noise cancellation headphones

Options
Has anyone had any experience of real noise cancellation headphones (for silence rather than for music)?
Does anything cheaper than Bose actually work?
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".

If you don't want to use them for music, what's wrong with earplugs?

I've got the Sennheiser PXC250, which appears pretty much to be identical to the PX250 in the review.

I was recently sitting right next to the engine on a four-hour plane flight and switched on the "NoiseGuard" without actually playing anything through the headphones. I'd say it cut the noise by about 50%, which I was happy enough with!

The sound EXCELLENT with music, too.

I don't know if they've been covered in the provided links already, but I've seen JVC noise cancelling headphones for the £30 - £40 mark. Not sure of their effectiveness though, as I've never used any noise cancellers.

Have you compared noise cancelling headphones with earplugs?

    No comparison!

I have a pair of the excellent Shure e2c's. On my way to work, I can doze on the bus without any music on, and it cuts the noise from any chavs yakking away on their phones pretty well!

They aren't noise cancelling as such, but "noise isolating", i.e. they are like a combination of earphones and earplugs, blocking out a lot of noise, rather than electronically cancelling it out. The advantage of this is that they are light and don't require batteries.

The sound quality when listening to music is great, and because they block out a lot of noise, you can listen to music at a low volume even in noisy surroundings.

I second this kinda thing as a budget option...

But have to say, mine block out *too* much stuff - even setting 1 (of 25) on my MP3 player is too loud a lot of the time...I'm never satisfied I guess :)
