Buyers cheque sent in an unstamped envelope... What can I do ?

Hi I sold a computer game on Ebay to a first time buyer for 99p. The auction finished 5 days ago and I have not had any contact from the buyer. When I was out this morning the Postman put a slip through the door to say that I need to collect a letter with insufficient stamps on....I am pretty sure that this is a cheque for the computer game. I will have to pay the sum of £1.35 in order to get the letter....
What should I do ? I will have to drive the 3.5 mile to the sorting office and then pay £1.35 to collect a cheque for 99p + 75p P+P ?

What would you do?

TIA

Go to post office and collect it - you don't know if it is the cheque yet. Could be anything.

If it is the cheque email the buyer and tell them what happened. Could been a simple mistake that they could easily rectify.

I would email the buyer and tell them that you have not received the cheque yet....could he resend it or send the funds by a direct bank transfer for the amount?

I agree, I would not go 3.5 miles out of my way for such a small cheque & have to pay nearly that in fees.

Get them to resend the cheque.

I believe the PO add a £1 'admin fee' on there as well. Really fair !

Hi my mistake it's £1.39 ... includes £1 handling fee for underpaid items

  • Why are you so sure it is this cheque?

If it is definite that it is this cheque, I would ignore it and let the P.O. send it back to the sender.

£1.39 is not a standard letter cost though even allowing for the £1 handling fee. For completely unstamped items RM charge 2nd class postage plus £1 , and 39p is not second class for anything.

It is more likely something with insufficient postage maybe the difference between something sent as a large letter when it should have been a packet.

On one occasion I rang the delivery office and asked them to describe the underpaid item.

It turned out to be junk mail so I said I wouldn't be collecting it ;)

there is no service for 39p. if it was a cheque with no stamp then they would be charging 27p for 2nd plus £1 fee.

so it is probably for a larger item that doesn't have enough postage on it
