:T :A Thanks everybody. I've been so upset about this and you've made me feel a lot better. I'm glad it's not just me who was shocked.

We would have happily given her a home here - our cat (and my hubby!) would have sulked a bit but he would have got used to it so long as it didn't affect his supply of treats and fuss! (hubby too! :D )

I haven't told my daughter yet - she'll be absolutely horrified.

I will ring the RSPCA tomorrow and see what they say. For all I know these people are already known to them.

I was somewhat shocked at the vets involvement myself, but I also know of other instances when something like this has happened: Once when a cat kept messing in a childs bed for payback for his tormenting her, and once with an unmanageable dog with behavioural problems. Neither was a reason to put a healthy young animal down in my opinion - but somebody's vet did it...:(

I also know people who took their rabbits and guinea pigs to a woodland and "set them free" when they became too much trouble. :( It beggars belief doesn't it?

Thanks again everybody for your support, it means a lot.

    Love Jacks xxx :D

  • Hi
Was following with interest and just needed to say how horrified I was! I have four babies (at present time we can't have children so they're the sub!) however though we've cut back on the type of food we feed them I could never do that!

It does make you wonder how many other 'beloved' pets will the innocent victims of the credit crunch?

You clearly have a heart of gold not sure I could have bitten my tongue with the woman after she called me a Silly Cow - but I have fab neighbours who all have (and look after) their own cats - even get treats given for them from the neighbours at crimbo!

    Makes me realise I'm lucky

Oh what a horrid woman she is! You are nicer than me Jacks, if I had been there I would have gone over and booted her in the face! Then I would have relieved her of the "burden" of the rest of her cats and given them a new happy home. Grrrrrr. Good luck with the RSPCA, I hope they do something!

    Thanks my lovelies.

I just sat there frozen with my mouth hanging open holding my coffee cup halfway to my mouth and feeling really pooey. :o

I rang the RSPCA and gave them all the details and the man I spoke to said they *may* pay her a visit or send her a letter and follow up with the local vets.

He says they've had a lot of pets dropped off lately because people can't afford the upkeep but it's been dogs mainly.

In the meantime I've just fed four of her hungry cats as well as my own moggie. From the way they wolfed down the Tesco cat crunchies and left over scrambled eggs and toast I gave them they're not getting much of a breakfast at home - and their people will be gone now until early evening.

They're all really skinny cats - and considering the seem to spend their days sleeping in my back garden they're not burning many calories, the poor little things!

They are probably full of worms if thin more than under feeding or as well as. Very rarely do you get underfed cats as they will kill, trouble is the more they eat from the wild bigger chance of worms, fleas etc so they need looking at.

:hello: Yeah, that's what I thought hon. I've already de-flea-ed them with the back of the neck stuff but I was scared to worm them in case they had already been wormed and I over dosed them - but I might speak to the vet or the nice RSPCA man about it.

I know I should butt out, but it's just in not my nature! :o

  • I am sitting here with tears rolling down my face - I cannot believe that someone would have the animal put down rather than spayed. What was the vet thinking?!?!?!?!? I know that my vet does cheap spaying (I think I paid £30 for my female to be done) and yet 2 years ago when I had to have my tom cat put down it was £50. It really does begger belief!! We have 3 cats and last year a stray appeared and we fed him for a good few months until he vanished off the face of the earth. I have a wee sneaky feeling he has been killed on the roads.

  • I read this thread at the beginning and I now have to say I'm horrified. I would have gone round and belted your neighbour.
I have 2 rescue cats myself and although I've now had to downgrade their food, (Lidl and Tescos own!) they don't go without and are never hungry (although they think they are!) - in fact, they are rather on the "fat" side if anything!

An old neighbour of mine moved years ago and just abandoned her cat. I remember ringing the RSPCA but they didn't seem to want to know. I was furious and upset. He was gorgeous and I ended up feeding him but I couldn't let him in the house as my cats at the time didn't like him so I ended up leaving my shed door slightly opened so he had somewhere dry to go. I got him re-homed locally but he kept disappearing from his new home and kept coming back to my shed! So I had no choice but to "adopt" him.

Just makes me cross that people can behave like that - if they don't want them, have them re-homed...and as for the vet agreeing to that...well, I am shocked. My vets have an agreement with the Cats Protection League so would re-home any cat in that situation.

Oh Annamc75 I never meant to make you cry! :( - although I must confess I've had a good weep about it all myself on more than one occasion.

Deep In Debt I think you're amazing honey. How many people live near you and how many looked out for that cat? Just you my lovely! :A I'm dying to know which vet it was so that I can give them a piece of my mind. There aren't very many round here so I already have my suspicions...

I think I'm going to go round, and be perfectly polite but just let this lady know that I'm feeding her cats during the day when she's at work , ask if they've been wormed lately and make sure she knows that she never needs to do that to a cat again cos silly cow I may be  - but I'm willing to help withthe animals if she has a problem keeping up her obligations to them.

  • Awww, thanks Jacks. I think you are amazing doing what you are doing and I'd certainly want to go to vet and give them a piece of my mind too. I've had a good cry about it too - I just could never imagine treating my cats like that.

My ex neighbour was a nightmare. She didn't have the cat neutered (she said she couldn't afford it although she earnt good money and spent it on booze) so he was a bit of a handful but my mum helped at the cats protection league at the time and they had him neutered. They then re-homed him close to me but he seemed to prefer living in my shed - which he did for 6 years! Unfortunately, he became ill so I had to have him put to sleep but he was 15 at the time so I guess he didn't do too badly!

I think you are great offering to help looking after the cats for your neighbour. It's always difficult to know how to approach neighbours - I did it with my neighbour at the time and things got nasty, so I just quietly carried on feeding Jasper without her knowing.
