I only switched to reusables when DD1 was 14 months old and DD2 has been in them from 1/2 weeks old, when the meconium had gone. I used Moltex Oko disposables for the first couple of weeks but have since discovered Wiona's which are just as eco friendly, but much softer and nicer and the boxes can be used as CD racks once the nappies are finished :D .

DD2 is built quite differently from DD1 but we are still using DD1's large nappies now that DD2 is 2. DD2 is taller and slimmer and the nappies are now sitting on her hips, but still sat in the waist of DD1 at this age. Luckily DD2 is now potty trained so this doesn't matter any more. Anyway, I digress here!

My point is that reusables have saved us a considerable amount of money since we started using them and when we have no 3 next year, we will be using the smaller ones again, only topping up a few larger ones which, after nearly 4 years of continuous use, are now starting to show their age :D .

We have never found that we need to buy bigger clothes to accommodate the nappies, apart from pyjamas as we use bulkier nappies at night. BTW we used pocket nappies during the day and 2-part at night.

What type of liners do you use with pocket nappies?
I never really understood this. The padding goes inside so the bum sits against the nappy fabric. But surely you need to put a liner there or it will (obviously) get dirty...

alot of pocket nappies have fleece as the layer against the bum, so it negates the need for an additional liner.

Also if you have fleece lined nappies, and use a fleece liner too, it sorta makes a double negative, and the wee doesnt actually travel through to the soaker part that well. iyswim

  • Ref the section on using Real nappies. Now that premium rate disposables are approx 20p each, up from 16p and added to the fact that babies are out of nappies 6 months earlier when using real nappies, a nappy laundry service is not only simpler to use and more environmentally friendly, it is even cheaper.
That has got to be good news? Washing at home can save even more money, especially if used on a second child.
Don't forget the hidden cost of disposables too. The endless trips to the supermarket and the cost to You, the taxpayer, for disposal.

i tried washable nappies but when you have a large family and house to keep going it is hard to keep up with the extra washing and drying. i also found that my LO had trouble rolling over and moving around as the nappy was so bulky. i also hated having to trail wet and dirty nappies around until i got home to put them in the machine.

i used motherease nappies and they cost me a lot in the outlay but ended up going back to disposables
What's for you won't go past you

    :spam: post per chance???

If not I apologise but I do suggest that you go check out your facts as most disposable nappies cost between 8-13.3p a nappy not the 20p you suggest!

Also remember that reusable nappies don't always hold as much as disposables!
No I am not against reusables infact I have 13 multicoloured fuzzi bunz in the drawer however we can no longer use these as they last for only 20 mins with our daughter before leaking. So not so mse for us as opposed to disposables and nappy free time!

  • Ooh, what are fuzzi bunz? I have a couple of reusables here given to me at a community day... I used terry flats with DD most of the time... Wasn't adverse to the odd disposable when out for the day though...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...

Hi krystaltips they are insert nappies, come in all kinds of colours, we have about 8 bright pink, 1 peach, 1 lemon, 1 lavender (thats purple to me!) and 2 white ones. I found them fantastic, well until my LO started drinking so much (on a normal day she drinks approx 6 or 7 cups of various liquid (her cup is a 13oz one ) but on a bad day she has 4 or 5 lol)
I think because she drinks so much they obviously aren't suitable for her. When she had the medium ones they were perfect and I bought them to replace mothercares rubbish smart nappy system which I wasted my money on!

anyway heres some of the colours. http://www.fuzzibunz.com/fuzzi_bunz_diapers.php
They do printed ones aswell :)

  • OOh thanks Rusty... Might have to invest in a few of those! (Will leave it a couple of months though I think!)

  • I used Kushies with DS. I think I had about 10 of them so I always had clean ones to hand!
It was a big outlay to start of with, but worth it in the long run.
It is nearly 8 years ago so unsure of the competition these days! Probably similar to the above!?

    Here they are http://www.mothercare.com/gp/node/n/76223031/?extid=ps_ggl_Bath%20and%20Baby%20Care_Brand%20/%20Kushies%20/%20Reusable%20nappies_kushies&gclid=CKzitr6M15UCFRqH1Qod821FWg
