Oh another question = how do you wash them? I know that may sound stupid but I mean, to get the best out of them and for them not to go like cardboard (like my towels do!!)

Terry nappies are not particularly fluffy I find - maybe so they don't collect solids (!) deep in the pile?
They won't be particularly soft when they dry (if you line dry or put them on an airer), but if you really want them softer you can always put them in the tumble dryer for a little while to soften them. To be honest, that's one of the reasons I use fleece liners, so they feel softer against DS skin...:o

I gave up trying to rinse nappies in the loo to get rid of solids - young baby poo is not particularly solid and I ended up getting it everywhere. Up until recently I soaked my nappies prior to washing them for a couple of hours in Napisan, then washed them at 60c, sunlight bleaches out any stains leftover after that.

I've used motherease shaped nappies, and can't speak highly enough of the motherease wraps too. I've seen them new on ebay, but they're not cheap even there. Airflow ones are poppered, Rikka one are velcro.

Do have a look through http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/ for more help and advice.

  • We use Motherease one size with Motherease boosters and Little Lamb wraps. Up until now we have been using fleece liners as my baby wasn't weaned but am going to start using flushable paper liners now so the bulk of the solids can be flushed away.

I just chuck them straight in the nappy bin (have a mesh liner) and then wash on a 60 wash with a pre-wash. I put a couple of drops of lavender oil in the softener section and they come out smelling lovely. Sometimes they do come out a bit stained but like a poster said above a day out in the sun usually does the trick.

Have a look at the little Lamb Nappies site, http://www.littlelamb.co.uk
they are lovely and great value if you buy in bulk. I think I would have probably bought them instead of the Motherease if I'd known about them at the start as they are much cheaper bought in bulk. Can't rate the bamboo ones highly enough but they do take longer to dry than the cotton ones.

Enjoy using the reusables, there's something really nice about seeing a load of nappies out on the washing line!

We use washable nappies with the execption of putting our daughetr in a disposable at nightime when she's asleep. We use the Nature ones that you can get at Boots, Mothercare & Sainsburys as they are more "green"

We use bambino mio ones on the washable front and have found them to be excellent. We bought the birth to potty pack from kiddicare.com
    http://www.kiddicare.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/productdisplayA_34+425_10751_-1_15084_13593_10001_15084

It is quite expensive but it will last a long time- the one on the link above is slightly different from the one we got- we got a nappy bucket instead of the rucksack thing.

As I said we have found them to be excellent- we have bought a few extra outers from e-bay jsut so we have enough for her bag for nursery
  • sorry to butt in (sorry for the pun!) but i want to sell some of my reusables and the nappy lady site says they arent accepting any more classifieds due to fraudulent sellers or whatever.
does anyone know of any sites i could sell them through?
ebay won't let you sell them there any more!

Thank you all for your help (I will press the thanks button when it eventually lets me - I have an ongoing problem with it, it clicks & then doesn't do anything !)

Anyway, today I've got 12 terry nappies (nice fluffy ones) a dozen for £12.99
I've bought a pack of boosters from boots
a pack of liners from boots
    nappy pins

Can't find wraps, saw the rubber pant things in boots but they were too small (didn't have the large in stock) so will look again for these

The ones you get on the high street aren't much cop. ME wraps or Tots bots wraps:

are much better, they have new ones on ebay from various sellers or buy them from thenappylady etc.
  • If you are looking for fleece liners, try www.bumfluffnappies.co.uk or www.weenotions.co.uk
We've use bumfluff and they were very good.
  • can i just say from the same point of view as yourself SAM, my daughter is nearly 2 and has been in disposables for the last 6mths because i couldnt afford to buy the next size up in washables-hanging head in shame-i then bought her the appropriate size to do her until trained and found she absolutly refuses to use the washable ones on because they are so bulky and restricting compared to the pampers she has become used to now walking! She pulls at the tabs and removes them herself and when i put her in dungarees that she cant remove, she wont walk any where ( she resembles john wayne, lol) ive tried both stuffables.all in ones and the full terry system and she just point blank refuses to feel restricted!
SO......what im trying to say is PLEASE dont spend a fortune on a whole system, give your wee one a trial incase the shock is too much for them!
By the way....i LOVE washables so dont get me wrong-its just the gap in between using them with her was too long and she was too old to like the change! I will be keeping everything for number 4 ( hubby runs and hides, lol) though so i feel abit better!

    love and relax!

  • ok a few things - how often do you plan to wash? as I think you will need more then 12 terries, id say 15 - 18 is a good number to save washing daily. As for making them a bit softer, you can use vinegar to help soften them a little and tbh the odd dash of fabric softener wouldnt do much harm (just dont do it every time).

For the person who said they used fleece liners on their baby before solids - keep on with them now ur weaning, its the best time to use them as the poo becomes "flickable" and will often just fall off into the loo for you :)

The fascination with shaped nappies is that they r quicker and easier to use - thats about it because on the drying time and price terries are by far the best option.

Justie - if the nappy is soaked before say 3 hours (the average time between changes) then I would say it would need boosting yes :) Some microfiber could work out fab as its quite slim for its absorbancy.

Bin wise I agree, nappy buckets in boots/mothercare often rnt big enough - id say you need 16 ltrs plus, you can get them in a lot of places though and if you do go for a 16 ltr bin get a nappy net (although i believe you can get the nets in different sizes on ebay now) to save you having to pick up the dirty nappies one by one to put in the machine.

Go for a motherease Rikki wrap for over terries - they fit nicely and do a good job :) and if your not into pins, have a think about nappi nippas :)

another place you can buy and sell 2nd hand nappies is https://www.clothnappyaddicts.com which is a forum, although you need to have used the forum first before you can sell on it.

and if your looking for a rep in your area try https://www.teamlollipop.co.uk :)
