I remember reading somewhere that police sometimes hand out free security screws for number plates.

Yeh "security" screws would help a little but everyone has a torx bit these days

If you can get acces to the back you can just stick a bolt on it

It is all about making your number plate less attractive to the scumbags, so another couple of screws in each plate is worthwhile.;)

some security screws arent just torx heads, they have a special thread that allows you to fit it easy but it will never go the opposite way to remove it, trust me, i had to drill the old ones out of my focus no chance of getting them out without damaging plate and boot.
