broken number plate

i've been away and come back to find that half of my number plate has fallen off at the back. i can't see how that just happens, so i assume someone had a go at removing it and gave up when it cracked.

after some time playing on the DVLA website, i'm unclear what to do! i obviously need to get a new one but i don't know where to go or .how rapidly i need to do this. can i leave it until the weekend? i can only find various websites on designing your own number plate, but surely i need to prove it's my number?

i know i should know more about this, but i'm clearly a bit rubbish! any info would be gratefully received!

You need two bits of id, one to prove it's your number (eg the V5C) and something to prove your id (eg driving licence).

A local main dealer that sells new cars will be able to do it.

You need to do it ASAP, as it gives them an opportunity to pull you over!

You go to any local motorist shop or somewhere like Halfords. You'll need to take along the V5 Registration Document for the car as well as proof of your identity.

it depends on where you are in the uk,if you are in scotland and dealing with a scottish company then you do not need to prove ownership of the vehicle.
if you are in england or wales or if you are in scotland and dealing with an english company you will have to prove ownership.
best bet is to go to a local motor factors and ask for road legal plates not show plates, these will contain all the legally required data.
if you dont need the car instantly and its parked off the road and can wait a few days then order them from a seller on ebay who is definatly selling legal plates, they will clearly state it in thier listing if they are show plates or legal plates you will get them cheaper by doing this. but as i said if you need the car asap then get them from a motor factors or car accessory shop.

i wanted to go to the supermarket tonight (after being away - no food in house!)..... i guess i will have to decide whether to risk it or not.

    what a big pain!

thanks all for the advice (5 mins on here more fruitful than 30 on the DVLA website!)

A place called motoparts (I think) on ebay does decent plates delivered quickly with no need for proof of vehicle ownership, and much cheaper than most other places you can buy plates from.

could you possibly make one up of your reg number and put it in your back window till you get your new one made up...not sure if you'd get pulled or not

You would. The plate has to meet certain standards. The font and spacing must be exact, the printer's DVLA registered name and postcode must be printed at the bottom, and BSAU145D must also be printed at the bottom to indicate the plate meets british standards.

What about this website? They seem to sell standard plates as well as the illegal "fancy" ones.

Question is, would their "standard" plates also be legal, since no proof of ownership is required?

I personally would avoid sites like that if looking. Some will say they are only "show plates". As mentioned above, only Scotland can legally make legal plates without ID.
