Just found this thread and wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss.

I have been through 2 mc's but neither of them were anything like yours (I thank my lucky stars)
My first mc I started spotting old blood at 6 weeks. I phoned Doc for advice and was told it can be normal for a first pg so not to worry. This went on for 6 weeks. I had no pain at all and for 6 weeks it was just old blood.
I went to hospital for 3 month scan to be told that I had lost the baby at roughly 6 weeks (they measured the sac that was still there) Having never had anything happen like this before I was given 3 choices to remove what was left. I chose the tablets that bring on contractions to empty the womb.
    NEVER again! They were awful!

Second pg was exactly the same, spotting old blood at 6 weeks with no pain at all. I called my Doc and he said to go to A&E. We were kept waiting for quite a while before having a scan.
Same thing. Told I had lost the baby quite recently, all that was left was an empty sac. I opted for the D&C that time.
A little while after my D&C I got called into the hospital again for a biopsy of my cervix.
Seems that when the D&C was being done, some of my cervical cells came away too. Good thing I gave permission for them to run tests on the sac etc because they found cancerous cells.
The bottom line was that I had cervical cancer and had I not lost the second pg I would have died within months of having the baby as it was a very aggressive cancer.

Things definately happen for a reason and as cruel as it might sound to some the second mc was a blessing in disguise.

So now we have been TTC for 4 years, had 2 mc's and lost my cervix to cancer. Have been told recently that because we have been trying since my surgery 2 years ago and haven't fallen again then as soon as I lose weight we can go on the waiting list for IVF :j

To be honest though, as much as we would love a baby its not as much as an obsession as it used to be 4 years ago. I'm just grateful to be here.

Reading that back.....sorry its so long :o

  • hi dipsy, i typed in a long reply yesterday but it disappeared and i got logged out for some reason. the general gist of it was that all the people i know who have had a D and C (is it the same as ERPC?) have been fine and they recovered quickly. fingers crossed, but hopefully it will be really easy for you and you will feel a lot better tomorrow. are they going to scan first? in which case you might not even need it if things have settled now.

that plum thing may well have been the last bit, and might have been the cause of all the bleeding - fingers crossed for you. people don't really talk about the physical side of miscarriage so it comes as a huge shock, all the blood and mess.

i always thought that the blood you lose when you have a period was the womb lining, and was already there. i didn't realise that your body uses fresh blood to flush out your womb. sometimes it doesn't clot properly, especially if the blood loss is heavy so you can end up with huge clots which look sinister but are really just a ball of blood which clotted inside you, and then you bleed more to push it out. 6 days after the birth of my second baby i passed a clot almost as big as the baby's head, that was worrying but it was just blood and the hospital said i was fine. tmi but my periods started going like that around 5 years ago so a clot doesn't phase me at all now, and i LOVE my mirena coil because it's stopped my periods :D

good luck for tomorrow, i'll be thinking of you xx

    Thanks Carmina :)

I am totally on the mend now, only slight blood loss and not any pain so I am sure they won't give me a D&C - the Dr scraping around in there the other night helped me along as it dislodged the last bit.

I will be scanned in the morning so I am pretty sure they will see it's all gone. Well, I thought that last time but I do feel 100% better now and my cold has gone and the cough is easing.

I am going to ask for a coil tomorrow. I wonder if they would do that there for me?

  • if you're sure that's what you want then it's worth asking. i know my sis-in-law had hers inserted while she was already under anaesthetic for something else, lucky cow :rotfl:

i waited 5 weeks until my next bleed, but that's because i was hoping to talk my husband into trying again. i didn't think to ask how soon i could have it, and the doctor didn't mention it. it's probably a bit insensitive to mention contraception after a miscarriage so they probably wait until a patient broaches the subject.

i'm glad your bleeding and pain has settled down now xx

    Hi Dippychick.

I meant to say in my earlier post that for mc 1, I had the tablets to force the womb to empty but they didn't work in the way that was hoped. Everytime I went to the toilet I had to go in one of those hat things and give it to a nurse for inspection (yuck) Personally looking at everything that came out (clots, pink jelly like blobs and something that looked to me like chicken skin) I was pretty sure they had worked but I was told they hadn't so I insisted on a scan. The Doctors were right, the empty sac was still there.
I had to have a D&C in the end. Thats why I chose a D&C the second time. They are (for me) very quick and easy to have done.

You have a general and are done in less than an hour. Personally, after both D&C's I woke up to have a dull ache in my womb and slight bleeding. Very much like a normal period. I was told not to have sex for 6 weeks incase of introducing an infection.

If I was asked by any woman going through a mc I'd advise on the D&C every time.

I hope you get on ok today, keep us posted.

Oh Dippy, I am so sorry - I really have had my fingers crossed that it would be okay - but just caught up today and find it has not.

I really do think you need to go and get that scan and let them see what is happening, and do not be in a hurry to say no to a D & C as, as I understand it, sometimes if things do not come away properly you can get an infection and that can cause all sort of problems.

I had a D & C both times (and the first was on my 35th birthday, and was kindly slotted in on that day because my father was being cremated the next day) because the doctor said he believed that was always the best way to go to "make sure"!

Take care, big hugs to you and your rotten hubby (give him a slap from me for being bad tempered with you - and tell him to keep all DIY tools well away for a while until you can have that coil fitted!)

As other posters have said, be prepared for the emotions to be really s***** for a while - and for OH to be grumpy cos that is the only way most men show any emotion:rolleyes: - and feel free to pm anytime.

P.S. Meant to say, D & C not painful at all - just a slightly sore and achey feeling like a period, and you can usually go home the same day, although if I was you, and they offer, I should have a night in and a sleeping pill and some rest - that was what I did the second time.
