Just wanted to say, I am also 20 and left college at 18 after some ill health led to my A levels not exactly going the way I hoped... I got a job working in a callcentre and was making good money - damn good money for my age!

The problem was, I sat back and looked at everything and hated it. I wasn't making a difference to anyone, I didn't care about what I did and had no thirst for day to day life anymore..
That was on a Friday. On the Monday I went to my college, explained everything and got onto an Access to HE Diploma (HEFC) course and left my job.
(I'd hoped to stay P/T with work but i found it was badly affecting my college work and knew i had to focus on that)

I got my conditional acceptance from my chosen University on thursday, and I KNOW I'm going to do this, I'm actually going to uni in September. I never believed I could till last September, so much has changed in under 6 months.

Congratulations on your achievements so far and the very best of luck for the future!
    On the up :D

  • Just a little update!

3 weeks to go then my first year of college done! I can't believe how fast it has gone!! It's a bit mad at the moment trying to get all the work done for the deadline but I think I should be ok! :). One more year to go, then hopefully uni! :D.
  • Well done.

    Hi,

Just to hijack the thread a bit :) I am looking to doing an Access course (for Health). I left school after Lower 6th with 5 O'levels, been stuck doing low paid jobs, bringing up 3 children, taking another low paid job, and at 41 years old I'm gradually getting bored and fed up of having achieved nothing in my work life (don't get me wrong I am very happy that I was able to be at home when my girls were growing up, but they are nearly independant now).

The Access course I'm looking at is £650. Does anyone know if you can get any sort of funding for it? My husband has just lost his job but we don't qualify for any benefits that will help with college :(

I think I can get the Adult Learner Grant (like the EMA) but can't see that anything else is available.

I want to go on and do Nursing and then Midwifery after.
  • Hi

I think if you are unemployed or if it is your first level 3 qualification "A level" standard you dont have to pay

Alternatively there is lots of advice relating to grants from local businesses you can apply for if you look up "grant grabbing" on this site

I am in the same position with two children, one not at school yet though and I have been made redundant.

Good luck to you I hope it all works out :)

Well done. Can I ask if you're male or female? (Not that it makes much difference). I have a similar'ish situation. I am 18 and finished my A Levels a few weeks ago. I did double ICT and media, expected ABC at A Level (Results in august).

I had 5 conditional offers lined up from Universities to study computing. For a while, I'd realized that I was good at computing, but it didn't interest me anymore and it wasn't what I wanted to do as a career.

1 day before my UCAS deadline to reply to my university offers, I declined all the offers, decided I wanted to go into Psychology or to work with young people who have problems.

A few weeks ago, I started working as a teaching assistant, and have now got a years contract with them. After the year, I'm doing to apply for Psychology at University and follow my instinct.

Sure it's not the easy route, and it's going to be much harder for my to study Psychology then computing, but it's what I feel I'll be happy doing, and that's worth more then any amount of money.

Keep up what you're doing and keep us informed. I like reading up on what other teenagers/young adults are doing career wise. I think sharing what we have learned can help inspire each other.

    Hey, I'm Male :) You?

I think what you are doing is great! there is no point doing anything if your heart is not in it, you have to be happy with what your doing and IMO I think you made the right choice! Good luck with everything! & I also agree about enjoying hearing what other people are up to education/career wise, it's great to know others are in the same boat hee hee! :)
