15 Bottles of wine for £16.98 from Sainsburys

  • It looks like things have now got a bit easier, but this is how things went on Saturday evening...

I was phoned back and had a lengthy "discussion" which went along the lines of them saying I couldn't possibly have expected the price to be £16.98 and me saying that the voucher is clearly worded to say that it gives £30 off any of the enclosed offers which are all £39.99 + postage, so I'm not "interpreting" or "reading it as" anything - that's clearly what it says!

The discussion went on for some time involving me quoting from the Consumer Protection Regulations 2008 and giving examples of what other companies have offered/given to get me signed up for something.
At some point during this it was let slip that their marketing department was aware that there may be a problem with the current marketing campaign. I also said I was aware that other people had thought it was clear the £30 voucher was off the £39.99 price. (Well, I knew about nicstuart40 anyway!)

They were saying that they couldn't possibly, as a good company, be using advertising that misleads the customer about the price and me saying that of course they shouldn't but it appears that they may have stepped over the edge with this voucher mailing.

Anyway, by this time I was offered the full deal (15 bottles and corkscrew) for £16.98 in the hope that this offer will improve my opinion of them. Well at least they got there eventually!

They don't actually ask for the voucher number so it may be worth a try even if you didn't revieve a mailing. You will need a nectar card number.
  • Both Nectar Wine Club and Direct Wines Ltd are in Reading, so it is West Berkshire County Council Planning and Trading Standards that they will be worried about. Possibly worth mentioning this as it shows you've done some homework and you're one short step from reporting them.

I did notice that even after giving in on they price they were still trying to guilt trip me by saying that really I was "taking advantage of them"! The difference is that what they are doing is a criminal offence (up to 2 years imprisonment and/or unlimited fines) whereas I am perfectly entitled under the law to "take advantage of them".;)

I've just tried to order it but the lady on the telephone said that without the voucher code, she was unable to accept my order:confused:

  • I did perservere and it paid off, 3 phone calls later and a return call from a manager she honoured the mailing as a goodwill gesture. I just kept repeating myself mentioning all the points above, the sales staff were really digging their heals in and in the end I said I would like a call from a manager.
