15 Bottles of wine for £16.98 from Sainsburys

For anyone who's got a nectar card and just received a mailing for their wine club, they've made a bit of a blunder. They've sent a flyer which shows different cases of wines that are half price BUT... they also enclosed a £30 off voucher which is for items included in the flyer SO... take this example - 12 bottle of white (plus 3 free Riojas and a FREE corkscrew) would cost £76.28 which they discount to £39.99 - take off the voucher and it just costs £9.99 plus delivery so a total cost of £16.98!!
Now they have got wise to this and you can't order online but ring up and you'll be fobbed off but persist and someone senior will call you back.
This is what we did: say that you'll buy the wine at the discount shown and then claim back the £30 at a later date. The reason for this is that you've then entered into a contract with Sainsburys so they are duty bound to honor that contract. Throw in that you'll also be talking to Trading Standards and they back down and agreed to supply the wine.... SO! 15 good bottles of wine plus a nifty corkscrew for £16.98! Cheers!

I also received the mailing from Nectar (nothing to do with Sainsburys as far as I can see) with the £30 discount voucher and also found that the voucher code "has not been recognised" when used on line.
I phoned them on 01752508581 (not the 0870 number) and was told that the voucher was just to attract peoples attention to the prices having been already reduced by at least £30. (The prices are indeed shown as "reduced" by arround £36 to £38). I said to them that the voucher only mentioned a £30 discount, not "at least" or "over" £30 so I couldn't see how it could be relating to the existing reductions. They weren't shifting though and I hung up so I could have a think about the next move.
They may be on very shakey ground with trading standards. I think this is called "bait & switch", where the traider leads the customer to expect a low price then when they go to buy it the item the traider comes up with some reason why the price is much higher, knowing that a lot of customers will still go ahead and buy. Whilst they may be committing a criminal offence, reporting them still doesn't get the customer their deal.
nicstuart40,
Surely the only "contract" you enter into is that you are offering them £39.99+£6.99 postage and they are accepting your offer. (The offer and acceptance is the basis of the contract). As you have agreed to pay them £46.98 I don't see how that puts you in a good position for getting the £30 back later?! I would of thought that was a very high risk way to go. Did you just get them to accept the £16.98 on the phone in the first place or did you really get the £30 back seperately later?0 -
I didn't even get as far as agreeing any prices. I simply stated I wanted to buy the wine and then when they said it would be £39.99 plus postage I said I also had the voucher. Cue lots of waffle about how many other customers were confused by this etc etc. I just calmly said I'd ring trading standards and immediately they took my number. 2 hours later a nice team leader rang and apologised profusely for the confusion and put through my order at £16.98
It is a club, so if you do this and don't want to pay £76 for the next case, then don't forget to cancel after you get the case.0 -
If it's true about the voucher just being there to show the discounts already applied, why does it have it's own code? There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0

This offer seems too good to be true, and at present (it's now 09:42 on Sunday 20th July) I'm waiting for Nectar Wine Club to call me back, having called them about 1/2 hour ago.
I tried doing this online, but the voucher code wasn't accepted, so I called them up. I was informed the voucher merely highlighted the discounted price of a case:
Sunshine mix from £78.00 to £39.99 (save £38.01)
Zesty Whites from 76.28 to £39.99 (save £36.29)
Barbecue Reds from £77.48 to £39.99 (save (37.49)
PLUS free gifts worth £50.96 if pre 02-08-08
Arguing that the voucher clearly states:
'Order any 12 bottles from the enclosed offers and receive a £30 discount with this voucher'
and:
...cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. ...'
clearly implies this voucher is to be used WITH this offer, thus making the case only £9.99 (plus £6.99 postage, £16.99 in total). I was told by the chap, 'If that was the offer I'd be doing this myself....' seemed rather patronising - after all, I AM taking up the offer!
So rather than take up the challenge, it seems their instructions are fairly clear at present: If you can't convince the customer to accept the £39.99 price, refer it to a manager. Take the number and we'll call back (this morning, I'm told). I now eagerly await the call.
Will let you know how it goes.

:money: Well it got to 12.30 and there was no return call, so I rang again.
I asked the lass who answered for a quick call back which happened.
The chap I spoke to was most apologetic and it seems my number got lost in the system. All perfectly reasonable, esp as he explained they currently had no backlog of waiting call-backs.
I was told they knew they hadn't presented the offer as they had intended to, but would honour the voucher and supply the wine case + 3 free bottles of Rioja + free corkscrew for £16.98. It will be with me (I asked for it to be delivered to my workplace) within one working week. No argy-bargy, no threats, no whinging. All done, very civil and polite and no problem!
So may I suggest if you're going to take up this offer, phone the wine club (Yes, the 01752508581 number works perfectly, thank you to SkySurfer :T ) and explain to the telesales you'd like to claim the case ++ at £16.98. There should be no hassle and please accept they'll have to call you back as the managers have to authorise this. There's no need for threats, intimidation or other forceful tactics now, so just wait for the call (follow up if necessary), place the order and wait for the wine to flow.
Remember it IS a club offer and it's YOUR responsibility to cancel or continue with the full-price (currently £69.99 = £6.99) quarterly case subscription.

Just opened the offer, phoned them, was told the voucher wasn't applicable, but was there just to draw attention to the prices. I was going to go for the offer anyway as £49 for 15 bottles is still good, when I thought I'd just check with the wise heads on this site first.
Having read the posts, I have just phoned back, spoken to a different customer services advisor who tried to tell me the same thing. I think they must have a script as he said virtually word for word what the first one had said. More or less, don't be silly, if it was only £9.99 for 15 bottles I'd be buying it type of thing.
Anyway, thanks to you I persisted and am waiting a call back from a manager.
Thanks.

Meant to add, I think this is run by Laithwaite's.

Just had a call from a very nice manager (I think his name was Paul); he was very helpful and pleasant and has given me the offer at £16.98.
Thanks to you all again.
