B Gas Boss says "wear two jumpers"

One of the 130 demands the unions put to the PM this month was to have the 6 large energy companies disbanded to force "true" competition as the watchdogs feel that none of the energy companies are willing to step out of line to provide cheaper home energy. And lets not forget we pay so much for gas since we dont have enough of our own storage so we sell what we extract and then buy it back at an inflated price. This was thanks to governments of past who believed it was better to exploit the strong pound than to secure our future.
Wearing two jumpers wont stop homes from becoming very cold and in some cases damp. When i moved into my flat I was constantly wearing a very thick jumper and had the windows closed. I had 2 13.5 tog duvets on my bed to keep me warm at night. And for this energy saving I was graced with mould under the carpet and damp on the walls from the build up of moisture and with not enough heat to dry it out it would have just gotten worse! Energy saving is a great idea but his suggestion is short sighted and I would like to poke him in the eye for making it!0 -
Trouble is the energy companies are doing enough "fiddling" without letting them get their hands directly on people`s winter fuel allowances!
Reminds me of the times you could see people queuing up for their child benefit on one side of the post office and then spending it on the other side on fags and scratchcards.0 -
Hear Hear Philbamb. He is crass and rude and thick & if I need his advice on how to keep warm I'll bl**dy well ask for it !
And we were the same when we moved to this house, however many layers we wore and however warm the duvet, if you touched the top of it your arm came away wet, my youngest got asthma and was in an oxygen tent for 2 weeks. Why do you think so many people died of TB & pneumonia in the old days ? Because they didnt have adequate heating thats why!0 -

So where would you say the winter FUEL allowance was supposed to go? Someone elses supplier? The local tea shop?
I've hear too many stories of pensioners that use this money on other things then complain they cant afford their bills. If the money went straight to the supplier this wouldnt be a problem.
If you really have a problem with the money going directly to the supplier then I think it should be issued as vouchers as opposed to giving them the cash, at least that way the winter FUEL allowance would get spent on FUEL.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
Maybe we can have multiple threads about how leaving the heating on all of the time saves money!Happy chappy0

I use to work as a volunteer for a charity with old people and I know many who spend that money on camcorders, tvs etc
I know there are some genuine people who strugglePlushchris wrote: »So where would you say the winter FUEL allowance was supposed to go? Someone elses supplier? The local tea shop?

Exactly, I'm not saying there arent people that struggle, I just think the winter fuel allowance system is flawed, it should be vouchers or paid straight to the supplier, I also think it should be paid in installments rather than a lump sum, that way they dont think "ooh that'll buy a new telly" etc.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -

It`s certainly flawed alright when they pay it to people living in Spain and other warm countries!0
