If that is the case then they have the same problem with their tanks at St Helens, Preston & Chester.

But there again, we could both be suffering from the same psychological problem as some on here seem to think.

I am sure that there are some crappy storage tanks that cause contamination, and I am allso sure that its not ALL psychological.

I fill up all over the country and have to log my fuel consumption extremely accurately, along with my mileage. (company car)

As I said I Try to use Sainsburys when I can, but I really see NO noticable difference when I fill up with other fuel.

I just dont see any scientific FACTS being posted to tell me why I should buy "posh" Diesel.

I used Sainsburys for a couple of years on my 1999 Mercedes C200 85,000 miles mainly because it was 2p a litre cheaper and thought there was no difference. I was constantly getting 21/22mpg around town.
I tried BP and get about 24/25/26mpg around town now, I've also tried ESSO recently and get similar to BP.
Sainsburys maybe £2 a tank cheaper for me but taking the MPG in to account, BP works out about £5 cheaper overall.
I really thought all was the same! I'll be using branded petrol from now on !
THats my findings, each to their own of course! ;)

Ah the answer to everything when a valid response can not be thought of or something can not be disproved.

I'd call it the wool over the eyes effect.

BTW Tesco can't all be supplied from this vopak depot, because when they had the problem they said it only affected the stations in the south east.

your zafira could probably run on a nice diluted mix of diesel and vegetable oil,so tesco, asda or morrisons diesel should not make any differance to the running of your engine, when your vehilce ran differently did you mention this problem to the places you got it from, did it not worry you in the slightest at the time?
it would have worried me if i had filled up and then my engine started playing up.

Yes which is why I only filled up once at each of the locations.
3 different Morrisons cause poor engine running (albeit all in the same region - common supply depot?) Never mentioned to the places I filled up mainly because I wasn't returning to them for about another 6 weeks. Seemed very non-MSE to make a special trip to tell them.
Tesco & Sainsbury cause a 5-7 drop in MPG. These fuels were used anywhere between Cambridge & Edinburgh so not a regional thing.

People can quote placebo, psychological or any other in vogue buzz word they like, but until they can prove categorically that there is absolutely no difference between the fuels and it is my driving style, I will continue to use other brands that I know work well with my vehicle. It is no skin off my nose, I can always find fuel as cheap, if not cheaper, than the ones that I boycott.

Is anyone who is reporting better mileage from better fuel actually logging the numbers on paper?

Or are they all just trusting the in car computer?

I actually log all my details in a spreadsheet everytime I fill up(I need to know exactly what my car cost to run so I can claim it back from my employer).

I log miles done, cost to refill, cost per liter, and the date.

The spreadsheet works out exactly how much per mile it cost to run my car, and how many miles per gallon/litre I am getting.

It is very accurate and it doesnt always agree with the car computer.

I think I will have to start logging where I purchased the fuel too (dont know why I havent been doing it already:rolleyes: )

Since my car doesn't have a computer, I work it out from mileage done between refuelling stops. I always fill the tank each time.

If you think about that, the pressure cut off or flow rate causing more/less froth could be different between supermarket and brandname pumps. Allowing greater litres to be filled in the brandname pumps, giving the illusion that you only managed to get 300 miles on 34 litres, whereas in fact what happened was you only filled up with 32 litres at the supermarket (above the level your tank was at when you filled it just now at Shell).

    Figures just for example.

There are so many variables to consider.
