Yes, but even if it doesn't break down, efficiency is reduced to to scale build-up = higher energy usage = higher cost = NOT MONEYSAVING. A kettle may not break down due to scale but you can SEE it (so its there!), and costs more to run! If you get scale in your kettle, its in your washer too!!!!!!! Because people cant see it in a WM they think its not there!
As to the site I linked to, I could (and will), link to more, but as that site is very respected (its like questioning MSE!), I thought it was enough.pretz wrote:somehow dont understand the pretence in big brand company as business is business and the only way to be in business is to make money.
WHAT I WAS RANTING ABOUT was people insisting that they *knew* (not thought or suspected, but KNEW) that the evil manufacturers were part of an evil conspiracy to dupe us into using excessive amounts of powder. They recommend that for, ummmmmmmm i dunno, best results maybe? Maybe they have a lab and people who are paid to work this stuff out? Maybe you and your trusty WM aren't quite the same? Maybe they might know best. Why else would they do it, I've already proven beyond all reasonable doubt it doesn't increase profit!Im a kiebee buzz,buzz!0 -
Just the other week had the washer repaired due to an electrical fault, engineer said there was NO limescale build up, at all.
I use a spoon full each of washer powder/liquid and soda crystals or soapnuts on lighter soiled items. So not even half the recommended. I use a low temp wash where possible, hotter wash for towels and linen, then a cloth wash on a high temp between once a week/fortnight. Tablets I usually use half a one. I have 2 sons who wet the bed very frequently so I do a lot of laundry, 2-3 loads per day is normal here. Never bought calgon tablet.
Enough proof for meOne day I might be more organised...........

How old is your washer? Do you live in a hard water area? Are you aware your sons bed sheets are crawling in germs, as all that amount of detergent is doing is getting rid of the colour, and covering the filth with a lovely fresh scent...
The dirt is still firmly absorbed into the fibres...Im a kiebee buzz,buzz!0 -
Would I be pushing my luck on this thread if I asked someone to recommend how much soda/vinegar to run through my machine to deal with possible limescale?:o
BTW I only ever use one tablet not the recommended two. My understanding is that a great deal of residual detergent is left in clothes, thus using only one tablets = clean clothes and less detergent residue. Or perhaps I'm just confused
I do love a good debate:j

Detergent residue? Doesn't your washer have a rinse cycle? Can anyone tell me why the manufacturers tell you to use 2 tabs, if 1 works just was well?????????????? (see previous posts)Im a kiebee buzz,buzz!0

Thank you for this. I'll make sure to check tomorrow whether or not my washing machine has a rinse cycle; I suspect it might have but you can never be too sure about these things.
Do you think I should now start using three tablets instead to 'catch up'?

The germs are killed at the higher temperatures, detergent doesn't kill germs! They smell clean because they are clean rather than of an overpowering smell of detergent covering a smelll, the fragrance left when using a limited amount of powder or soapnuts is minimal. Their mattress is also steam cleaned. Washing machine is 5 years old, possibly a little older. My sons aren't toddlers so I do have quite a bit of experience in getting their sheets clean. Water quality, not particularly hard.
Reducing the powder used also reduced the eczema my partner and my son suffered with due to having less residue left on the clothing. Rinse cycles do not get rid of it all!One day I might be more organised...........
