Ok, these links are from Washerhelp, a site run by engineers, people that earn a living repairing washing machines.

    http://www.washerhelp.co.uk/limescale_2.html#cl_q1

That site is ran by 1 engineer not engineers. It's 1 persons opinion.

And how can they be sure that it is softening the water enough? You cant see limescale buildup without dismantling the machine

We can be sure because our WM's haven't broken down ;) How can you be sure that using loads of washing powder is stopping limescale?

A lot of OSers use a mix of washing powder & soda crystals (Dri Pak 1KG 29p in MrT) in their wash. The soda crystals are great for stain removal and softening water so there's never a problem with "hidden dirt" or limescale. ;)

I don't use calgon/the recommended amount of powder and have never had a WM breakdown due to limescale and we live in an extremely hard water area.

I don't know about hidden dirt but surely if your clothes appear clean and don't smell it doesn't matter, my mum always says we are too clean these days!
As for washing machine breakdowns, I live in a hard water area and never had any probs.
Each to their own and if someone chooses to use less powder in their wash they are not affecting anyone else so what's the problem?

actually kiebee it's not my hot tap that gets the limescale it's the cold one. sorry but i think i'll stick with my half dosage +soda crystals and vinegar, clothes clean /no smell/no mould in washing machine saving £ and just to tempt fate i've had my machine since dd was born (she's 14 tomorrow) live in a very hard water area and had no probs

Thanks for the rant kiebee but i think people will still decide to do what they want. Your rant won't make a jot of difference to me and my 1 tablet wash.
Never said it would, just wanted to make people see sense

    http://www.persil.com/cc_detergents.aspx

The amounts needed according to Persil vary from 80ml of powder to 310 ml of powder. Tablets vary from 2 to 4. Capsules from 2 to 2.

So if you use one type of detergent the amount you need can vary by 4x - but another doesn't vary at all... doesn't quite add up, does it!

Also my mums washing machine got blocked with washing powder and the guy that came out told her to cut down on her powder or move to a liquid as powder clogs and can break down the machine ...

    Hi

I live in a very hard water area - limescale is a real problem, so much so that I can only have the kettles that have the element inside etc etc. Taps and the top of the kettle ( ie the limescale actually sticks when the water jumps up when it boils!!) I try and deal with them with white vinegar.

My last washing machine was over 10 years old when it finally died - and that appeared to be because of the electrics on the board where you select the wash - and not the classic Calgon drum advert where everything clogs up.

Out of interest how much could you save towards your next washing machine by saving the amount of Calgon or other product you should put into a wash. Is it not just as cheap to save this money and hope you washing machine is a trooper??
