There was no judgement and no snide comments, as far as I could see.

If you look at mitchaa's posts, you will find he has a way to give little digs at benefit claimants. Discreet, yes, but nonetheless practically always there.
    Gone ... or have I?

Would we be eligible for any credits if we both work?

If she could not find a job for whatever reason would we still lose out on the above?

For heavens sake . If you love each other and want to be a real couple then move in together and make it all above board without worrying about benefit payments. You will be exactly the same as any other working couple with a young family and able to claim the means tested benefits that you are entitled to.

Be absolutely aware that if you move in and don't inform the benefit agencies you will be found out and could lose a lot more....not that i think you would of course.

The question is not a wind up. I just want to proove to my partner that we could a reasonable standard of living by living together.
She is just worried that by living together her allowances would drop dramatically.
As I said she does not work at the moment so does not pay CT or rent, she also gets income support and single parents benefit.

If we moved in together and she did not get a job straight away would she lose IS, SP and have to pay full CT and rent?
I understand DLA would remain untouched.

If she did get a job would she lose the carers allowance as she will be working from 9am - 3.30pm and be earning £12,000pa?

A more helpful answer to your query...

She will definitely lose her HB and CTB but with your income on top i cant see this as a problem as its relatively low only being £410pm.

The next step is to break the £190.72pm payment down as it involves quite a few things. The IS payment from this will be £60.50pw of which she will definitely lose. This leaves her with £130.22 which is not single parent allowance as such its made up of CTC (child tax credit) and CB. She will definitely keep the CB element of which is £31.35pw, this leaves her with a payment of £98.87pw of which will be CTC.

Now i dont have the exact figures off the top of my head you'll have to check the HMRC website calculator but your £22k will have an effect on this £98.87pw payment on a sliding scale, not all the way down to £0 but it will probably reduce by about half.

So out of the £190.72, i would put a guess on it that she would be able to keep around £80-90pw of this, £31.35 being a definite as thats CB, the remainder in CTC.

She cannot work and earn over £95pw and be a carer no, so its 1 or the other.

I dont need to tell you that not declaring as a couple can lead to all sorts of unwanted attention but im sure you'll already be aware of this.

Anyway best of luck, im sure it will all work out

You would get the basic element which is around £10 a week for definite on a joint income of £34k.

I'm not sure if you would get a bit more for having one child entitled to DLA though? I don't know how it works for disabilities but someone on here will.

One thought though: will you have to pay for a carer if your OH works full time? What about in the school holidays etc - will it be an extra cost? I'm wondering if you need to factor in such costs - but maybe you already have?

It is quite common for women to fear losing their own income when they move in with new partners, especially when there are children involved. I think she may be worried about having to rely on you for money straight away iyswim? It's quite a drop after being independent. That may not be the case for your OH, but I know it is for many so it is worth bearing in mind when you are discussing finances.

There are only 2 tax credit awards that you can get

    WTC-Working Tax Credit
    CTC-Child Tax Credit

You would not qualify for WTC no as your income is too high. It is set stupidly low at around £15k

You would definitely qualify for CTC even with her working and earning £12k, it will probably only be the basic £545pa entitlement though.

I have seen mitchaa's previous posts and will agree that his former posts are nudging the very edge of trollism and have no place on the benefit board. However, in my opinion this one wasn't - and I think we should judge every post on its own merits and not by who posted it. We all have off days (although mitchaa has more than most :p ) and occasionally post comments that perhaps we shouldn't.

I think what comes across in the written form is not always as it would come across if it was said in conversation to another person.

Please be mindful of this when talking about other people on the boards.
