Do I have to pay for a PAC?

I want to move from T-Mobile and have less than 1 month left on my ccontract.
My new supplier (O2) says to call T-Mobile and give them notice that I want to quit on the end date of my contact to move suppliers and to get a PAC from T-Mobile so O2 can set me up ready to go.

T-Mobile want to charge me for a PAC if they give me one now even though I won't be leaving until my contract is up. They say if I ask for a PAC when my contract is up then it will be free.

Can they do this? I thought a PAC was free and only if I used it before my contract was up would I have to pay the remainder of my contract off.

Is this the way PACs work?

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK only T-Mobile try to charge you for a PAC - I've obtained one for free from Orange before, not sure about Voda or O2 but I've never heard of them charging for one.

Is this charge in addition to the remainder of the contract that you have to pay off?
  • I went through this with TMobile the other day and it took ages to find out what they were talking about. They kept telling me that I had to pay for the PAC until I told them that OFCOM would not permit that. In fact they make you pay upfront for the outstanding days up until the end of the contract (which you have to pay anyway) and then they will refund after the end of the contract. What they want you to do is wait until the contract actually ends before getting the PAC "free" and then there's a delay until you can get connected to another provider so they keep you on their books for a bit longer.

Sorry if this sounds a bit confusing - it's nothing like as bad as when the TMobile customer services people "explain" it!
  • This is exactly what they said to me - only more convoluted. They want me to pay for the PAC code and pay for the remaining contract period.

I'm happy to pay for the contract period - that's fair, but when I told them I wasn't going to actually move from T-Mob until after the end of contract they still want to charge me for the PAC code. and it seems like it is not a standard charge but varies according to how much contract you have left with them!

They are not allowed to charge you for your PAC code you can ask for this at any time during your contract, you then have 30 days to use it, I think, (it's been a couple of years since I got one of these). But they are entitled to have you pay off your contract. This is what Vodafone did when I left them, it didn't take that long either... It was with me the next morning, if I remember correctly...

Anyway next time you ring just quote OFCOM. They should jump!!!

    Hi
ring them on the last day of the contract for PAC not at the end of 11 or 17 month

give that PAC to new provider and its ported with 48 hours.

you will get final bill from t-mobile within 14 days

T-Mobile do not charge you for a PAC.

And technically they are allowed to charge up to £20 for the administration of providing it, AFAIK.

By the way you are saying that it sounds like you work for T Mobile
  • So long you are past your min contract, I can't see if they can charge you for a PAC (unless T&Cs say this). I've got my PAC from Vodafone and O2 with no problems (i.e. no charge), and they are pretty quick.

mobile networks make you pay in advance anyway dont they? so effectively you would pay your last month before your contract is up anyway!

What? I rail against T-Mobile quite readily on these forums. I am stating facts. Get over it.
