When the MATHLETTS were small I found a carpet sweeper ideal for that once a day whip-round. It was brill at removing crumbs, threads and cat hair. HTHLife's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

Hi posh*spice,
There's an earlier thread on carpet sweepers that should help so I've added your post to it as it helps to keep all the replies together.

My earliest memory as a little girl during the last war was riding on my Mums big wooden Ewbank carpet sweeper. She had it for years and preferred it to the heavy clunky Hoover that my Dad bought her.She said it was a waste of the electric when she still had to push it around the floor anyway. My late Mum was a canny wee scots woman who knew the value of a shilling. She brought her three kids up without a fridge, freezer, washing machine ,microwave,or food mixer .her food mixer was a wooden spoon and her washing machine was a boiler and a mangle that I learnt to turn the handle of .She never weighed more that 8 stone all her life as she spent most of it doing housework.
The only concession she had was when my Dad bought her an electric iron that was plugged into the middle light via a double adaptor (no ring mains or wall plugs in those days )She like this new electric iron, as before she used two flat irons on the kitchen range.
I can still see her now standing at the table (no ironing board either)it had an old army blanket on there with a piece of sheeting over it , with her pinny on, and expertly she would spit on the flat iron to make sure it wasn't too hot, and would iron my Dads starched white shirts beautifully.
Do folk still use starch any more I wonder ,anyway her Ewbank was her pride and joy and she also had a big polishing mop thing with a huge tin of polish that she bought from the Kleene-eze-man at the door.It polished her lino in the bedrooms .In the winter it was a very quick scamper across the floor to bed as there were no carpets in our bedrooms ,only lino and a small rag rug next to my bed. The sitting room had a big carpet square and also my parents bedroom, but the rest of the house was lino or tiles on the floor0 -
i remeber my grandma having one of these, i did think about one for my kitchen and conservatry but would be no good in place of a hoover in my house, i hoover daily upstairs and twice (and sometimes more ) downstairs with my sofa being done daily and the sofa tthrows changed weekly at most only for the reasons of dustmites etcDFW nerd club number 039

I remember having one when I first got married (couldn't afford a hoover) and it was brilliant. When we cleared Mums house after she went into the care home I got hers.............its and old Ewbank, very good and a lot easier for me to use than the hoover. I've seen more modern ones advertises that are even lighter weight and am really tempted at some point in time to get one.Mary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

I had a swivel sweeper from QVC which was excellent, but DH stood on the handle and broke it. Now I have a Gtech rechargable sweeper which is also very good.0
