When I do jacket spuds in the microwave, I put them under a very hot grill to crisp up the skins and this works very well and saves using energy in the oven. Wondered if this would help with the boiled potato syndrome???

This thread resurrected a very old memory for me. When I was first married about 30 years ago, we bought one of the first crockpots which were all the rage, but they were the kind you could not remove the crock if that makes sense. Well I did JP in this crockpot and was so very sick that night - I probably had a bug or something but I always connected the wretchedness with that crock pot and could never use it again!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, thats the way I am with a certain perfume you can buy in Boots. I got a gift set of it and used the bubble bath, talc, soap, body spray and perfume all at once. That night I was really ill with a bug and now every time someone so much as walks by wearing that perfume I feel sick :o

I do baked spuds in the slow cooker - with no water. I dont know how they taste straight out as i then stick them in the oven whilst getting the filling ready as I prefer baked. This just crisps the skin a wee bit. The others are then stuck in the fridge for packed lunches the next day and taste fine.

I thought of this whilst standing watching my tattie being microwaved in the bakers.
:hello: Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want:hello:

  • Sorry of tangent a bit, but Pop Tarts and Chicken tonight both make me want to hurl. When I was pregnant with my DS pop tarts ad was always on in th morning and with DD it was chicken tonight- 'scuse me starting to feel nauseous!
  • I found refernce on another thread that you can cook baked potatoes in a slow cooker.

I was wondering how this can be done (I haven't used my slow cooker yet)

Also are the results better than cooking in a microwave/oven?

Is it more economical than using the microwave?

    Thanks

I've cooked jacket spuds in the slow cooker..

First cover each loosley in foil ( mine only takes about 3 large pots), and gently place in the ceramic pot, and add about an inch of water.

YOu have to make sure that the water won't leak into the foil wrappings.

They come out ok, but i do prefer oven-baked, as i find the sc ones to be far less 'fluffy' in texture.

what do the skins come out like Jolaaled?
I like crispy skins (which is why I don't do microwaved ones, imho :o they're nothing like a baked potato)
although I have been known to start them in the micro to get them hot & finish them in the conventional oven

it'd be nice to find a more economic way of doing them, never thought of SC-ing :)

    HI Swan.

that's the other prob with SC jackets...the jackets are not crispy at all!

Basically, you end up with cooked potato in a soft jacket, that has the texture more like a boiled potato.

    Good luck!
