read today in newspaper that when buying goods on line in a try before you buy , or pay after delivery type sell, that the company run a credit check on you even if you intend to pay full amount after delivery. this in turn can surely harm your credit rating. If this has been disgused please forgive me

Any company or organisation I believe must inform you prior to commencing a search. It will be buried in the small print of terms and conditions which you sign or agree to.

99% of credit searches are carried out because YOU (or someone pretending to be you) have either applied for a loan, or credit card, or to open a bank account, etc (a financil product or service). The main reason for a check is to establish you are who you say you are.

To insure no person is attempting to use your file and pretends to be you, then protect yourself.

Anyone Know why credit reference agencies do not amend the records when a discharge from bankruptcy happens. Or why the financial institutions do not amend their records as settled.
I thought that by sharing anyones information so easily and freely that at least credit reference agencies should keep up to date with the records instead of charging the person to correct information.

My work colleague got a copy of her credit report, and two old credit cards she used to have accounts with were showing as a balance outstanding. She queried it, and was told that the information is only sent once regarding a closure, so if one set of information goes astray (computer upload error, server backup going down etc) then the information will remain inaccurate.

She contacted the relevant places and they sent the revised information again to the credit reference agencies that the accounts were closed and paid up.

Sainsbury used Experian when I applied for a card last night and got instant rejection - got a bad Experian record. HSBC must be using Experian too hence got rejected me too (got rejected for a loan too in August even though I bank with them for last 9 years). Got accepted on Norwich & Peterborough and Abbey (MBNA) cards - They must have used Equifax as I got a good Equifax record.

Just thought of sharing this with the board as it might help someone.

BTW, I am posting here for the first time, but I am not new to this forum or site - very useful/helpful site I must say.

  • Erm, I'm new to this, so any advice would be appreciated. I know that the table is only there as a guide, but 3 that say Equifax in fact uses Experian if my checks have been right - Sainsbury's, IF and Lombard.

  • I work at a finance company that uses mainly Experian and Equifax for our credit searches on customers. We pay 0 attention to the credit scores provided by (for example) Equifax in terms of our decision making process. The reason for this? They charge us more if we ask for it ;)

Credit history is reviewed and scored independantly.. and there is a shocking disparity on some clients who are untraceable through one agency but show an abundants of credit on the other. This is not the norm though :)

Also for people worried about their debt they should take solace in the fact that there are many people out there who earn 4 x more than you but run up 10x as much debt :)
