Lulubells, he's not brave just mean, lol. He doesn't realise how much it will cost for the extra toilet paper tho!
  • Aftyer you defrosted and cleaned the freezer through:

Apply a layer of vaseline inside the surface of freezer. So next time when you need to clean freezer just gently scrap the frost away and be suprised on how easy it comes off because of the vaseline ( It should come out in BIG clumps )

So that way the job will be done quickly enough to save you food and no more need to defrost!!!
  • Great idea Str4ber3! Just recently cleaned out 2 big chest freezers due to DH accidently turning off the power to both of them within a week of one another!!

  • Ah blimmin' heck- got in yesterday to find a huge wasp in my living room, the handle fell off my beloved steamer the, to cap it all, realised my freezer had went off  Darn it. I have a 8kg pork leg in there- which asda sent instead of a 0.5kg bit, rang and got it cost refunded, result. Anyway, is it safe to eat the stuff, i've refroze bread, vegetables, as well as meat, sausages. I haven't told the boyf, was going to just cook the meat, very well, and feed him in to see if he notices. Or is this likely to give him food poisoning. Dont want to yuck all the food out, cos its such a waste. But dont want to give him food poisoning, HELP!!!!

    Hi singlehouseholder,

You should get more help with this on the Old Style board, so I'll move your thread over there.

I suggest you cook the meat and slice and then freeze in meal size portions to take out when you require. hopefully the freezer now working

Bearing in mind the original 'use by date' on the pork, you would be adhering to best practice by immediatley cooking the meat, thoroughly [making sure it is completely defrosted before cooking starts] and then as aycor suggest slicing and freezing in useable batches.

If you buy a product on a monday and the 'use by date' is the friday - you have five days to consume it.

If it was an uncooked product and you cook it on the wednesday - you have 3 days to consume it from the day it was cooked - you must use by saturday

If you froze the uncooked product on the tuesday - when you defrost it you still have 3 days to cook it and 3 to consume it [you 'saved' 3 days of the original 'use by' period by freezing it].

gets confusing - but hope it helps.

If you have already refrozen the meat without cooking it - DO NOT EAT ! - you should only refreeze after you have cooked it.

As has been said already, you must not eat meat that has been frozen and defrosted unless it has been cooked before refreezing. It's just not worth the risk of food poisoning.

  • damn it- looks like the lot'll have to go in the bin then :-(
The meat was so huge that I don't think it will have had time to defrost it really is a pigs leg. Think it'll probably take a few days to defrost, we estimated it'd probably take 8 and a half hours to cook!!
Off home to fill the bin.....
