Here's a story to make you laugh!
We went away for 2 weeks on hols and my hubby turned the freezer off by mistake - there was mince, lamb, veg, ice lollies - just about everything, as I'd stocked up at iceland just before we went. Imagine coming home to that stink. We then had to carry the freezer outside (at 6am in the morning) empty it and wash it out. I left him to do the cleaning as I was too busy throwing up!!!
He's never criticised me for doing anything wrong again, cause I bring it up every time :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
lol - thanks wardy and meerustar, it makes my top shelf defrosting seem quite minor !!Currently on a life sort-out !! ...reducing bills, decluttering and getting into fitness - busy bee0

That's certainly true, and is also why I'm not a huge fan of upright freezers, although with a fridge/freezer you don't get much choice
Many years ago now I hadn't closed the door properly on a tall upright freezer and I've no idea how long it had been left like that but I ended up losing the entire contents as they weren't even chilled when I discovered it so didn't want to risk eating anything. Even to this day, every time I walk past the fridge/freezer now I give the door a firm shove to make sure it's shut tight"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

So do I, CQ - I thought I was the only one! As the fridge freezer is en route to the sink and the back door, it gets an awful lot of presses per day!
Our disaster was because husband didn't shut the door one night (I've never left him with that responsibility since  ). It was the middle of summer so everything was nice and soggy by morning. We cooked up about 3 quiches and 3 large pizzas (all vegetarian) and took them round to some friends who we were meant to be going out with that evening, with a salad I hastily threw together. We sat on their patio and ate our offerings, so it made for a cheap evening anyway!
The rest of the stuff we distributed around the family. The frozen chips, btw, still felt pretty solid, so we re-froze them and they haven't poisoned us.
I think it must be a very rare household that hasn't had this crisis at least once!I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

So far no disasters here...but that's because my Mum had a minor problem once and was forever telling us to 'make sure you shut the freezer door'. Seems like her words of wisdom had an effect....for a change.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

Mine too!!!... in fact one day DS asked me if I had OCD after he'd watched me check it about half a dozen times in the space of an hour :rotfl:
I do it sub-conciously though whenever I walk past so I don't even notice how often it is
rchddap1 - every time I see/hear DS go in the freezer (quite frequently in summer for ice and lollies etc  ) I always tell him to make sure the door is properly shut, so hopefully he'll too have these words ringing in his ears for a lifetime!"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

LOL at the replies. I currently have to defrost my small freezer in the kitchen. For some reason, even when it is clean and not frosted up inside, the door doesn't always close tightly - it looks closed so you don't immediately notice anything. It's only when you go to open it the next morning you find it's been working overtime since last night's tea and the top shelf is completely frozen solid
It was my fault this time too:o
I am now the proud owner of a right leg that can do a swift sideways strike on the offending door as I visit the fridge. (I decided that if I were to knee it straight on as I was standing at the unit, I would invariably dent it.)

Yet again, we are the same. Summertime is also the time when my dulcet tones can be heard ringing around the house/garden..."have you shut the freezer door?"0 -
My other half in his quest for economising decided to put a saver plug on our freezer. Being a man, of course he didn't read the instructions properly, as this type of plug didn't work on our particular freezer. Result, a huge chest freezer full of beef and gravy and organic burgers !!! semi-defrosted. I told him to throw it all away but he has change the plug, refrozen it all and is eating it!! Not me...I don't want to end up glued to the toilet seat! This freezer is kept in a shed so the stuff was probably mushy for a week or two. Anyway, he doesn't seem to have come to any harm (yet) from eating the refozen stuff.
