Isn't it only monthly on their landlines though (and, IIRC, you can have any ADSL broadband on a POHP line).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yes as you point out you can get homephone only for a short minimum term, and use a broadband ISP of your choice, some of which offer short minimum terms.

    Hi all,

I've not scrolled back through the length of this chain so apologies if it's already been covered but I'm looking for the best landline/broadband deal that doesn't require a 12 month or 18 month sign up term.

I'm about to move into a property that I may move out of in 6-8 months and wouldn't be able to take any deal with me--hence wanting to escape signing myself into a deal with in-built penalties now.

    Thanks for your help,

In deciding what to do the following link may be of interest:

    http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/2010/06/cheaper-charges-for-uk-consumers-to-end-phone-contracts/

Will it be cheaper in future to sign a fix period contract and cancel or to remain outside a fix period contract?

I have no idea of the answer by the way.

P.S. Need to ensure you understand all cancellation charges and ideally get them agreed in writing.
  • I already have Broadbad via O2. I'm thinking of moving to them from BT for homephone. Does anybody know if they permit Call Redirect - I need to use it for work calls ( I add a prefix under BT,to each business call to avoid being charged to my home phone bill)

    cheers

I think caller divert costs £1.75 per month with O2.

Are you moving to O2 to save £££? I read in some other forums that BT might be able to match O2 deal if you threatened to leave - try it!

  • Just to chip in, I also mentioned Primus when I came to renew my contract, and sure enough, I was offered a £36 credit (£3 per month), bringing my line rental down to £8.54 per month. This seems to be as low as BT will go. Strangely, they wouldn't refer to Primus by name - they kept saying "that other company you mentioned"!

Just to update anyone else who has been offered the (Primus-inspired) £36 credit. Mine did not show up on my next bill as promised. When I contacted BT, the representative claimed to know nothing about it, and kept reminding me of all the other savings I was receiving (Paper-free billing, Evening & Weekends discount etc.) Only when I persisted did he look into it further and miraculously discovered the £36 credit, which will apparently appear on next month's bill. We'll see...
  • Having read this article I rang Primus to confirm availability of 'line rental only' (I have 24/7 free calls and broadband with Pipex and line rental with BT.
Unfortunately, Primus stated that the 'saver plus' package included a free w/e calls element and that all (weekday & evening) calls outside of this (element) would be charged at their advertised rates, ie. the cheap line rental is not so cheap!
I then checked with BT and they confirmed that I can move to their 'up front' payment deal (£113.88/yr) with no impact on my current 'line only' contract or my 'Pipex' contract.
This makes the BT deal the cheapest 'line only' deal out there.
  • Are you sure you will be able to make the necessary number of calls via BT though? If not, £1.50/month immediately gets added.
    30 years, 217 days!
  • Just checked with BT again - they confirmed that the 'up-front' payment method was not available to the basic w/e anytime plan users.
Looks as though I will have to start my 'moneysaving' search again!
