Xantia's have 65 litre tanks, with up to 5 litres as a reserve. I find 1000 miles a tank unbelievable...

My 2000 Xantia Estate had a bigger tank than my 1997 hatch, although I can't remember how much it took. The HDi Xantias can do 50mpg on mixed work with a relatively brisk driving style (Mine had over 180k miles up and it is still achieving that sort of figure) so I imagine they would easily exceed 60mpg on a long run with gentle driving and even more if you used "hypermiling" techniques.

As for official figures for older cars, or even new cars- they are almost completely useless. Manufacturers optimise their cars for the best headline figures. The car with the best 0-60 time and top speed may be painfully slow in real life (I'm looking at you, Honda) and it's a similar story with the mpg figures.

I get 135 miles from 35 litres of petrol round the town and 350 miles from 55 litres on a long traffic free m/way run but if I hit traffic mileage goes down to about 300 miles from 55 litres,

That means your car is doing between 11mpg and 29mpg, depending on conditions. Out of interest do you know what your car's official figures are?

I'm just happy to get over 300 miles from a tank - it's usually considerably less.
