Top old cars for efficiency?
Does anyone know where I can find out the official efficiency figures for cars that are no longer manufactured?
There's a great government website that tells you all the data for cars such as Co2 emissions and fuel economy figures but it only covers "new" cars. It's no good for used cars that are in the price range for most of us.

you could try www.parkers.co.uk as their car data is quite comprehensive. If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0

Best place IMO to find out MPG values for older cars is http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/ although bear in mind the system relies on the data input by users from a tank brimming and the litres and miles travelled - so some people could put in fake info.
These will probably give a better indication of the types of MPG people are getting than MFR figures. Although unfortunately this site uses the litres consumed per 100 km measure.0 -
Thanks guys. Parkers was kind of what I'm looking for, but the data doesn't go back to older models. The german site was close to useless, you need to compare these things scientifically. Also the model names were fairly confusing, not to mention the economy measurement (l/km)
I don't mind looking for data for each model one at a time but where would I go to find a specific model's specification? I can't even find it using a search engine.
Edit: I think I've found something! I came across this site. Seems to have been compliled in 2002 which is pretty ideal. Unfortunately it's listed alphabetically, so I'm going to put it into a spreadsheet so it can be sorted, I'll also add in some current models.0 -
my 406 (2000 x plate) is superb
On a drive from southampton to dover i averaged 74.4 mpg
on a drive from southampton to swindon i averaged 78 mpg
However that was being very careful, i usually see over 60mpg when driving normalish, i always get over 1000 miles per tank0 -
dodgy arithmatic, or a non-standard fuel tank for mr.406
70 litre tank = 15.39 gallons
15.39 gallons / 60mpg = 923 miles.
15.39 gallons / 48mpg(more like it) = 738 miles
i dont think you get over 1000 miles a time0 -

In the past MPG figures were not comparable as they were tested in different ways (often to try look the best possible on paper) so were not tested in a consistent manner. The figures on spritmonitor are real-world figures, IMO you can't beat real-world data.
Of course there will be people doing different types of driving in very different conditions, but in all probability if one model of car consistently attains low values of consumption (compared with other cars), then it seems probable there is something about that car meaning it is more efficient (that is the scientific method).
Best way to use the spritmonitor site is probably to go through all the brands, and sort by l/km lowest first and look for which type of cars cluster at this end of the list that meet your needs. You may need to work through the pages to get through the new super-efficient cars to the old efficient ones. To convert l/100km to MPG try http://www.eforecourt.com/l_100km_mpg_convert.htm
Also bear in mind that age may have different effects on efficiency on cars, if any. Another plus for data from the real-world.0 -

or maybe an overoptimistic odometer0 -
I think he gets over 1000 kilometers to a tank, but has not figured out how to alter his computer.
If you could get 1000miles outta a 8year old derv 406, we would all be driving them.
Ooops his life is gonna be in tatters now!"!0 -
