Top old cars for efficiency?

no big reason why not. my Xantia would be exactly 60 mpg at 1000 miles on a tank, though I've only done ~58 (931 miles) best so far. if I slowed down to 43 mph everywhere, who knows?
More dodgy sums, going from 58 to 60 mpg would take the miles from 931 to 963
Still about three times what mine does but not at the magic 10000 -
i get 1000, i dont care if you believe me or not!0

that used just under 73 litres and wasn't actually empty, whereas the most put in the tank is 75.76 litres
and I deducted a few miles from the odometer indication as, according to nav websites (which could be wrong) for a known trip done many times abroad, it seems to over-read slightly on newer tyres0 -

If you could get 1000miles outta a 8year old derv 406, we would all be driving them.
Ooops his life is gonna be in tatters now!"!
Well I've managed to eek out over 1000 miles from the tank of a 11 year old Passat TDI. Capacity 62 litres + say 5 litres more from 'venting'. Trip computer was showing 72 mpg IIRC and is accurate to 1-2% at worst. Taking that into account, I can belive that a 406 can get over 1000 miles.
Stop being so cynical, learn some eco-driving 'skills' and go and buy an old style derv!0 -
didn't Clarkson manage something similar? I seem to remember scotland and back on one tank0

that was an audi a6 or a8, he done it on one tank and covered 800 miles. that was with no electrical items on,with all windows up and sticking to 56 mph,and no hard accelerating or braking....work permit granted!0 -

It was an A8.
Nothing special about what he did.
A 2007 A8 has a 23.8 gallon tank(108 litres)
So clarksongob did roughly 33mpg in a diesel car.0 -

Maybe you just drive down loads of hills you dont drive back up!
I doubt your claims.0 -

The declared tank size is 90 litres = 19.8 Imp gallons, and therefore the required economy was 40.4 mpg, as declared at the start and implied throughout the TV article, though we didn't learn if the capacity was slightly larger as he predicted when halfway
So unfortunately it's actually you who is posting untruths on this thread
Next time you look up a fuel tank size on the internet, remember that US gallons are smaller0 -
Does anyone know where I can find out the official efficiency figures for cars that are no longer manufactured?
There's a great government website that tells you all the data for cars such as Co2 emissions and fuel economy figures but it only covers "new" cars. It's no good for used cars that are in the price range for most of us.
the magazine 'Practical Classics' used to have a buyers guide formatted similar to parkers with fuel economy figures. It was starting to include modern classsics (10-15yrs old) when i stopped buying it so maybe it will include the kinds of cars your looking at now.The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0
