You can purchase a quiet compressor (diaphram type)that is designed for this job. Freetherm in Germany supply these.

I have access to waste oil, could u possible provide me with information on how to make my own burner to run my own house (average size bungalow) and garage. Is it enironmentally free?
I have my own waste burner made up at present but there is a lot of smoke with it. Many thanks0 -
Hi there, if anyone is interested I am the only person in the UK who hand makes Babington Burner Nozzles suitable for burning waste oil cleanly.
These are wat are mentioned further up the post regarding the ones on youtube.

Do you realise that you have to have planning permission, you may not get it, and a pay a yearly licence fee to burn waste oil? It’s not that easy to get it if you are importing oil from somewhere other than where it is produced IE: in a garage. It will also need careful storage in a ‘bunded’ tank and there are lots of other hoops to jump through!0

Nonsense!:rotfl:
Anyway; has no one thought to heat the house with electricity made by a WVO fueled generator?
This is one of the roads I am considering.0 -

I remember a program on TV many moons ago... I think it was called house of the future or somthing similar. They used a Fiat engine coupled to a generator for electrical power and used the cooling water of the engine to heat a thermal store I believe. I think it was in a well insulated compartment to keep heat & sound in. Sounds like a fun project if you can do it on WVO and service the engine etc yourself. Don`t know how cost effective it would be though. I am sure other people who view this forum could give their views. Good luck!If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you! :dance:0 -
We had a commercial waste oil heater for around 8 or 9 years where i worked previously. It was an absolute pain in the !!!. I think the make was Thermobile or something. The pickup filter they supplied was too fine and clogged within half an hour of running the heater........we were forever cleaning the jets, tweaking the air pressure, icreasing the air inlet, increasing/decreasing fuel supply.......nightmare.
I don't know whether it was just a bad make or whether things have move on in the last 10 years but we found that due to the inconsistency in oil quality you had to manualy tweak the machine all of the time.
If you could have a machine that tuned itself to the differing fuel qualities automatically it may be feasable.
With the amount of man hours we spent fixing the heater it was cheaper to fill the diesel tank and be done with it.
I think you need a licence to burn waste oil also.0 -

I too recall that project, I thought it was a VW but it was a while ago. I have pondered about how viable it would be as a heat & power unit, albeit with a more modern (but probably cheaper) engine especially one that runs on bio fuel.
I seem to remember that it was deemed to be reasonably quiet and very efficient at the time, does anybody have any details on anything similar?0 -
I had a moderately happy relationship till I moved with a waste oil boiler I bought in about 1988 from Davair at the Nuffield Industrial Estate, Poole, Dorset. They made spray booths as well as hot air blowers and boilers. I'm not certain if they are still there.
The boiler part was a Potterton Avon 2 cast iron 7 section commercial boiler with the waste oil burner on the front. It worked by heating the oil to 140deg F and atomising it into the boiler chamber with compressed air at 20psi with a Delavan nozzle. It was rated at 40kW.
The biggest problem was not with the quality of the bought-in waste oil which you can filter, but with small particles of carbon flaking off the heating element and blocking the nozzle. Even by using a low wattage element it will still carbon up and it is not possible to filter the oil after the preheating pot.
The burner is a high maintenance item and is not for anyone who cannot strip and repair it themselves on a regular basis.
As well as cleaning the heater pot, the boiler chamber needs to be cleaned of ash on a regular basis. Do not breathe the dust!!!
If you buy in waste oil it needs to come from the top half of the settling tank or you will get sludge, water and nut and bolts none of which will burn. If you have your own supply allow it to settle before using. Tank pipework to the boiler has to be at least 22mm and lagged due to the high viscosity of the oil.
It may be difficult to buy 'cleaned' waste oil these days due to H&S Regs. If anyone knows of a supplier of good burning oil in Cornwall let me know, I'm about to move again and I may need some!!
Good luck.0
