Also, on the same note women don't use any feminine hygiene either. I don't know how they get away with it but they just let it flow freely. In that heat it must be awful. You can't buy any of those there either so I had half a suitcase full of them.

 OMG how does THAT work  .... There'd be a trail....! :silenced:

    Urrgggghhhhh!
Makes the baby mess look quite pleasant in comparison!
I got a book called 'When your baby cries' by Deborah Jackson free on Practical Parenting. It basically advocates carrying your baby around all day, as they do in many cultures, meaning it hardly has to ask for anything. It must depend on your mode of carrying, but apparently Kenyans etc have the baby on the back facing the back of the mum's head. This means that the tightening of the thigh muscles just before a wee can be felt and you can act accordingly.

I read loads about this when I came across a site whilst looking for advice on cloth nappies..i guess if you have the time, and inclination it could work, which must be true in poorer countries.
I cannot understand why anyone would choose this though..it would be so much extra work on top of the usual demands of a baby
made me think..for anyone watching 'lost' what is the girl claire doing for nappies...!?

I don't know how it works but they seem to get on OK with it.

We practice a basic form of Elimination Communication with our 8 1/2 month old daughter. We've only been doing it for about a month now, but have definately got good results. There are certain cues to look out for, a lot more easier for poos! As soon as she starts doing the grunting, red faced thing, I get the potty out, whip off her trousers and nappy and sit her on it. Also, I put her on first thing in the morning, just after nappy changes and whilst I'm running her evening bath. We don't always get anything, but she seems to be getting the hang of it. There are still some days when she may only go on once if I'm busy or we're out, also I work part time and she is in nappies at nursery. Not quite sure what their reaction would be if I suggested they try it there!

Basically, its not 'potty training', rather than 'poo and wee catching'! As well as acquanting her from an earlier age that she doesn't have to sit in a wet or dirty nappy until it needs changing. I'm under no illusions that we will still have to do more comprehensive 'training' when she is a bit older and can understand more, but she does seem to be waiting more to use the potty. We certainly have less used nappies to wash!!

I think I'm really glad I didn't watch that programme, if they were so dismissive of the whole cloth nappying, cosleeping thing etc. I probably would have ended up throwing something at the telly, just as long as it wasn't a full potty!!!!

Not sure about the periods thing though, I know people use stuff like cloth san pro and mooncups but not using anything, ugh!!

At the end of the day what works well for one parent and child might not work well for the next. I suppose theres no right or wrong way of doing it. It's about finding a way which suits you and you are happy with.

come to think of it, i do know the signals that tell me my baby is going to wee

    1) i removed his nappy five seconds ago
    2) i forgot to remove his socks
    3) i'm wearing my only clean pair of jeans, the rest are in the wash covered in sick
    4) i'm leaning over him just about to fasten a fresh nappy

    erm, that's it :-)

alleycat i think they have to ignore the co-sleeping comment she made, the advice is not to do it so they kind of pretended she hadn't said it. my baby doesn't sit in a wet or dirty nappy, he makes signals that say 'change me immediately' lol!

Lol!! Jess usually goes just as I have taken off the dirty nappy and am about to put the clean one on. Gets her vest, top etc sopping and I usually forget to take her socks off too!
