The point is that there was enough room on the pavement to get a CAR through, so there was absolutely no issue for pedestrians which is why I did it. However, if I had left it fully on the road then a large van/lorry would not have been able to get through, so I believe it was necessary. So sensibly speaking I didn't do anything wrong - however it seems that the law is the law, whatever, and there is absolutely no common sense involved any more.

I fail to see where the lack of common sense come in - unless it's yours you mean. You parked on the PAVEMENT. This is for pedestrians. It is not up to you to decide there is not a problem with it. Did you stop and think about people who use the pavement - maybe in wheelchairs, partially sighted/blind etc? Pay the ticket and park where you are supposed to in future.

I love scraping the buggy down the sides of cars on the pavement

They said that there was another car's width on the pavement, so I guess that they did think about it.
    Happy chappy

So they did - most thoughtful people don't mentally measure pavements in car widths!

pay it and then appeal it. If you let it get to £100 and still not pay
it, it will then escalate by £50 or £100. Did you ever see "Bailiffs" on
the telly. Some punters ended up paying up to £1000 for a £50 initial
    debt.
You should double check this but I'm sure you can appeal without paying. Only once the final decision has been made will they request payment for the original reduced amount (£50).

By paying up first you are admitting guilt and could be waiving you're right to appeal.

write (and phone) within 14 days to inform them you are disputing the ticket and if they uphold their decision then you get another 14 days from that point to pay the fine at half price.

    Thanks!
That's exactly what I'm going to do. I will attach a picture as well so I can prove how much space was left on the pavement, and how little space would have been left on the road.

I wouldn't argue too much or they will hit you with driving on the pavement too! - another separate offense.
The council are also in their right to charge you for any damage caused to said pavement. Pavements are designed for people not cars, and vehicles do damage pavements - someone has to pay for them to be fixed why should it be the tax payers?

You parked illegally. Pay up and don't do it again. Next time learn the rules.
