Powergen - Any Good?

We have just took up tenency in a house which is supplied by Powergen for both gas and electricity.

We have not had gas/electric with any other provider before so don't know who is best.

We are a professional couple in a 3-bed house. Gas central heating, good insulation.

Would staying with Powergen be a wise choice?

I like the sound of the online management etc., as I like to do everything I can online for convenience.

moved from British gas to powergen a couple of years back, after numerous price increases moved to Telecom plus. Now thinking of Ebico as telecom plus have increased my bill from £43 to £58 (even though i only actually use about £30 a month)

Powergen didnt cause me any problems and were efficient at getting any cheques out to me when my account was in credit.

Don't think their very cheap at the moment though.

I have just switched from Powergen to EDF. They were OK although I has a bit of hassle with estimated bills early on but that was sorted out. However they have just introduced a £40 yearly charge for IGT gas customers. That is people who have an independent gas transporter supplying the gas pipes to their home, the case with a lot of newer homes. Due to this new charge I switched to EDF.
If your gas pipes are Transco powergen are OK.

Having switched in Jan 05 but now wish I hadn't. They are the most incompetent company I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Customer service non- existent and online account management is a joke especially as I wasn't being recognised as an electricity customer for 9 months. Had to complain to Energywatch in the end. I want to get away but have no idea where to go!!!!

Never had a problem with them since they I was moved from Amerada (when they became part of Powergen) about 2 and a half years ago.

I believe they're not currently the cheapest as they've recently raised their prices, but, as Martin says on another thread, don't move at the moment as the comparison engine's prices might be wrong anyway!

I personally haven't had any problems with them, but they did allow me to run up a £200 debt by allowing my DD to stay at £30 pm when we were actually using nearer £50. Eventually I increased the DD myself to pay it off, but you can imagine what might happen if you let it go on for a long time. There's another thread on here somewhere where a lot of people have had their DD increased hugely by Powergen for what seem like a variety of reasons. One thing I like about their online service is you can take your own meter readings and enter them online. I advise doing this as their estimates aren't very good - another reason why people are getting shocked when their bills suddenly change.

I moved house 5 months ago and have found that Powergen supply both my gas and electricity, I have made endless calls to simply get a bill and they have failed. The customer service staff are useless and haven't got a clue. I find them very frustrating as all I want to is pay my bills! As soon as my billing is sorted I will switch.
  • I have been with Powergen for about 2 years but just swapped to British Gas after Powergen took the p!ss this month. I managed my Powergen account online and advised them I moved home and supplied a meter reading in January of this year. The house I moved to already had Powergen as the supplier.

Anyway out of the blue in October - some 9 months after I had moved I got a call and flurry of letters from a debt collection agency saying I owed over £400, approx £100 a month for the months from September 04 to when I moved out in January 05. Oh, and that was a 1 BEDROOM HOUSE

Anyway I never received any letter/communication before the debt collector bill. When they first called I called Powergen and they said I owed nothing and told me to ignore the debt collector. I did. When the letters flooded in I phoned Powergen again and then they said, "Ah yes, you do owe £400+

I managed to find the online account and can see that they entered the final meter readings in May and had double charged for units used 2 previous bills. To cut a long story short I can't be fecked with the muppets and will send 1 letter to them next week and then pass it on to EnergyWatch. I'm more than happy to go to court to see the magic moment when they try and explain the double-charge wheeze :rotfl:
  • Absolutely, ronald. My own saga continues. I've just learnt that, apart from unilaterally deciding to split my 'dual fuel' account, so I lose the supposed discount associated with that and paying for them both by monthly d/d, and also apart from them taking it upon themselves to decide I've moved to a completely differenet address which was suprising news to me to say the least, the wonderful Powergen have now advised me that they've "withdrawn the last 3 quarters bill/statements" (which I never received anyway as they went to my mysterious other address they made up) and have sent me a new bill for this whole period, totalling £273 which I now owe!! An uncannily familiar fugure as this is the same amount I have paid them by direct debit for the said period!

Their regulator is my next stop too. Failing that, maybe we should form a class action??!!!
