Thanks for replies.
Am going to experiment with Toad in the Hole tomorrow.
Sounds delicious.0 -
i've been using my remoska to bake bread for the past few weeks and it has saved me a fortune as bread has gone up. Being a bit financially nerdy I have been sat here calculating the cost of a remoska loaf!
yeast 4p (I use lakelands)
flour 20p (Lidl have 3lb bags for 60p)
water free
sugar, salt, oil about 1p
cost to use remoska for 1 hour calculates at 7p per hour on my rates and it takes around 20 25 mins per loaf = 5p (tops)
total cost per loaf...30p!
I usually do 2 loaves a day (of 1 lb each) and it is plenty for the 4 of us.
I dropped lucky at Lakeland too yesterday when I went in as they had a shallow pan with a bashed box for £16.99 instead of £29.99, the pan itself was immaculate and still in the plastic wrapper so I grabbed it! DD was amazed as she insisted I would never get one off the bargain shelf, but I suppose my perseverence paid off, I have been going in for around 2-3 years!
BTW if anyone is as nerdy as me and wants to calculate the cost of electric, look on your bill to see what they charge per KWH (mine is 10.626p) look at you appliance (Remoska is 650 watts so thats 650/1000) then multiply the watts by the cost (.650 x 10.626p = 6.9p) Remoska costs me 6.9p per hour to run...bargain!Save £12k in 2012 no.49 £10,250/£12,000
Save £12k in 2013 no.34 £11,800/£12,000
'How much can you save' thread = £7,050
Total=£29,100
Mfi3 no. 88: Balance Jan '06 = £63,000.
Balance 23.11.09 = £nil.0 -
QVC are currently offering a very similar item at a much lower price - today (11/4/11) is about half the new Lakeland price for the Standard. The normal price is about £20 less than Lakeland. It goes by the name of Czech Cooker, and has a removable power connection with a temperature control, and a rack to rest the lid on when removed. I need to replace my well used one - itself a free replacement from Lakeland when the lid coating flaked. I did not feel contacting them again was fair!
I only spotted the pan being used to demonstrate another item on a flying visit to the TV station, and ordered on line from the website. It appears that it is offered quite frequently, as some reviewers there (all good) have had theirs, from QVC, several years.0 -

Im still gonna try and make some butternut squash soup in it today, but i think il have a trip to lakeland soon to test out their "lifetime" guarantee.
Call Lakeland and they will give you a new cooker.I did this last week for the same problem of the Tefal coating coming off. They will send you a box so you then send your Remoska back to them which will take 5 days just to get the box, then you post your broken one back to them. They check it and post you back a new one.Another option was take it back to any Lakeland shop and exchange it for a new one straight away, which is what i did as i used mine every day. When i called Lakeland i got a really nice guy called Paul who told me the above.
When i cook sausages i use my microwave rack which fits perfect and put a oven proof glass plate to catch the fat that drops off the sausages.0 -
Thanks imho..I think i wil just take it to the lakeland shop..i bought it instore anyway and still have the recipe...im still using it occasionaly, but only for "dry foods"..the non stick peeling is getting worse, the last time i made soup there were wee black bits in it...couldve been from stock cubes, but im not so sure.Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

Just reposting my experience of the QVC cooker as they were a bit arsey about refunding p &p when I had to return mine. QVC would not post my review on their website! My remoska grand blew my electrics again, so, reluctantly I returned it and accepted the offer of a refund.
I then missed it badly and so within days ordered the QVC czech cooker, since the 3l size and thermostat seemed appealing and I wondered if a differently manufactured cooker might not blow my fuses.
Today the czech cooker arrived but I've had to arrange to send it straight back.
For a start it is NOT a 3l cooker. I still have the tin from the standard 2 litre Remoska that I had and broke many many years ago and the QVC tin is almost identical in size and depth.
Secondly, I did not feel comfortable with the removable electric cable which inserts into one of two handles on the lid, rather than into the main long handle. It made the lid feel very unbalanced to hold and, coupled with the much shorter cable than on the Lakeland version, I just didn't feel safe with it.
When I phoned QVC customer services, the lady at the end of the line checked with a supervisor and came back and told me that it was a 3litre pan if you filled it to the brim rather than to the ridge where the lid fits. I explained that the lid sits in that ridge and suggested that the website info should be updated but she did not seem interested. Now I have to wait 5-7 days for recollection and up to 21 days for a refund.
I think I am done with remoska cooking, sadly.....
I am still missing my Remoska and may cave and get another...0 -
Mine from QVC has arrived, and it is, as I expected, the same size (but see below) as the standard Remoska, so I can use my old pans with it. The size was apparent from the brief glimpse I had of the pan while they were showing another item.
The pan is fully coated with what appears to be a better non-stick surface, including the base, so I may not do with it what I have done with my old pans, and sweat onions on the hob in the pan. (I note that this is not suggested in any of the Remoska recipes in the books I bought from Lakeland, anyway, as they suggest using a separate frying pan.)
The pan is very slightly smaller than the Remoska pan. This is not enough to make a difference for most things. However, I have one of the pan dividers Lakeland brought out. When this first appeared, the size was not correct, and it did not fit smoothly into the Remoska pan. It was usable, so I did not complain, and I think the newer version fits better. My slightly big one does not fit into the QVC pan, but since I still have my original pans, and they are usable with the QVC lid, no problem.
I thought initially that the removable power cable would make using the cooker more difficult than the Remoska, which I could use ambidextrously. It has to be arranged so that the handle must be used with the right hand. I don't understand this (it also applies with many saucepans with lips - if I'm stirring custard as I pour hot milk, I want to stir with my right hand, and hold the pan in my left) as it means my working hand is tied up holding the lid, and my less dextrous hand has to fiddle around under the cable. However, the extra stand for the lid helps with this. The power cable position does impose restraints on where the cooker can stand which did not apply with the Remoska. I have a suitable socket close to where I want to use it, so the cable length is not a problem for me, but I recognise annie-c's disconfort with this version. I've got used to it, though.
Having the extra support on the lid (which is not really necessary with the lid stand) means I can warm a plate over the lid.
The variable temperature is proving useful, and I have used it mostly for warming baked gods like croissants and scones, which I could not have done successfully with the Remoska. Anything which means I don't have to use the oven for one small item of food for one is an improvement. I have also used it for defrosting the meals which I have frozen when I have prepared large batches, and then heating on the hot setting. In the past I have shielded the meal with a silicone cake pan inverted over over it, but it was not as satisfactory.
I have made the same sort of meals which I did with the Remoska successfully, but have not ventured into the more adventurous ranges of food yet.
The recipes supplied are very limited, and not helpful in showing a range of uses for the variable temperature.
Sometimes vapour escapes through the power supply connection - I am watching this carefully, but the metal parts seem to be isolated.
I am not sure how many times I will be able to disconnect the spike of the plug without it sustaining damage, so when I lift the lid, I switch off at the wall, rather than following the instruction to pull it out. Pulling it out also means there is a hot spike to put down somewhere. As I stand the cooker on top of the hob surface, this is not a problem, but could be if it is used on another sort of surface.
Overall, I am satisfied with the QVC version, and find the additions an improvement. I would probably prefer not to have a removable power connection, though.0 -
Hoping someone can help:
When i bake a cake in my remoska (standard), the underside of the cake is sometimes not cooked thoroughly..especially towards the middle.
I've been using a separate sandwich tin to bake my cakes, placed on a small trivet (pinched from pressure cooker!), to try and ensure heat reaches the bottom a bit better, but am still failing very often.
Can any one give me some tips on how to rectify? THANKS!0 -
You would have better results without the Trivet.
A lot of the heat in the Remoska is conducted through the pan itself.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0
