  • I don't hear very well on the phone & I had already done some googling/internet searching on the topic actually but couldn't find anything about it , even on their online store locator.I've also emailed them and am waiting to for a reply, so I came here in the hope there would be some local people who might be able to help me, didn't realise I was doing anything wrong by asking,so sorry!

You are not doing anything wrong?! This what the forum is for. I just noticed that people responded to your op and you just then posted again about more info about tesco.

I spent a while googling info for you, looking at the papers online up there and council pages and thought you could maybe do the same.

Perhaps you should have stated in your op that you don't hear very well on the phone, that you had emailed them, googled them and done the store locator on their website (as i did for you).

I hope someone local will have the information you need

    fluffynit :)

anyone been/live there ?just want to know if there is tesco and if so how big is it and if there's a self scan for coupons and do they sell petrol please?

scbk said the rebranded store opens today , altho loulou said it a few weeks ago

I may be proved wrong but I guess a few weeks ago they would've stuck up a few temporary tesco signs after buying the store, and only now got round to fitting it out.

As I remember the store (when it was safeways/somerfield) was quite small so not sure if tesco would install self scan tills. The only petrol station is the shell garage. There is definatly 3 large tescos with self scan and petrol in Inverness and Dingwall though.

thanks for the info everyone, does anyone have any info on the tesco store please?

Whats wrong with using the local independent shops in Ullapool?
You obviously don't know/care about these people trying to make a living in their wee town , if, all you want is to know about is a Tesco.

Tesco move in and don't give a toss about anyone.
The next thing you see is a row of charity and 'pound' type shops opening where the independent can't compete.

Go take a look at Inverness if you don't believe me.

You go on holiday and all you want is a Tesco... JEEZ!!

excuse me but who said I was going on holiday? I'm not!! I live in a rural area and that would be the nearest supermarket available to me. I do use local shops at the moment and I'm finding it very difficult to survive so was thinking about monthly shopping somewhere cheaper.I care about being able to feed my family thank you very much, you talk about the 'local shops trying to make a living in their wee town',all I see high prices I can't afford, and yes it's a huge difference in prices not 3 or 4p on an item, try 30 or 40p and with some things even double! I don't buy ready meals I cook every meal from scratch and need to cut my costs as much as I can.
Get you facts straight before you have a go at me for asking a simple question!!!

What mean people there are on here:mad:

blackvelvetshoes...ignore the snippy posters. You have every right to ask for help and advice. Thankfully most MSE'rs are not quite as rude.

@bigron.....I live in the Highlands too and I dont shop with a view to 'the small shopkeeper' or people trying to make a living in a small town....I simply can't afford to.

If I was well off, then I would without doubt be more caring and benevolent, but as it is, I'm usually skint and my need to balance my budget is much more important to me than a person I do not know, balancing theirs.

It's all well and good being self righteous and judgemental........so long as you can afford to be.

You obviously haven't been to Ullapool!
There are a couple of great little shops but in terms of supermarket provision (ie cheap and cheerful) it is appalling. Small expensive supermarkets are not better than big ones. The locals aren't catered for, let alone the enormous numbers of visiting tourists. Tesco is replacing a rubbish Somerfield, not adorable artizan indie shops. Ullapool is thriving, there is room for a decent well stocked supermarket.
And if you had ever been on holiday somewhere as remote as this and discovered that the local supermarket was so badly stocked you might hanker after a Tesco too.
  • thank you aliasojo & getting-sorted-sarah and also everyone who tried to offer helpful advice it was much appreciated

the few local shops around here just try to make fast buck out of the tourists every Summer season, they forget that there's old folk that live here all year round and depend on them, instead they choose to fill their shelves with over -priced tat rather than basic grocery needs, how the pensioners cope I do not know  I need to save money and this is mse which is why I asked for help

right nuff said over and out, I shan't respond any more now :p

I suppose the advantage with the somerfield/tesco in Ullapool is that it's a town centre store, I bet a lot of the people who make use of their car park also wander off into other local shops.

It's the out of town retail parks that really suck the lifeblood out of a town/city centre

Blackvelvet - I have been to the store numerous times and it has the following - bear it mind it is a tiny store - when it was originally opened as a Safeway in 1997 it was the smallest Safeway in the country.

    Tesco Ullapool has -

    Hot Deli
    Small Bakery
    Toilets
    Cash Machine
    Customer Service Desk
    Small Seasonal Aisle
6 Tills - No Self Scan
    Small Entertainment section
    And all the standard departments

And thats about it - its a very dinky shop to be honest but for it's size, it carries a decent range. It could do with a small extension though ....

Tesco did a clean sweep buying up loads of old Somerfields, which were all previously Safeways in the Highlands. What people tend to forget though is that abou 5 years ago, the number of Safeway's across the Highlands exceeded the number of Tesco's we have right now across the Highlands - Food for thought as no one complained about a Safeway monopoly at the time!

When Somerfield bought the Safeway's, you would not believe the number of people who would bypass them and travel over a hundred miles south to get to Tesco. The Tesco rebrandings of the Highland Somerfields (nee Safeway) stores has been brilliant considering the starting points of run down sites - bright, clean, massive range and staff who seem happier.

For all those who continually criticise Tesco expansion in the Highlands, I would suggest you think about the number of jobs created (every store has doubled its Staff role now under Tesco), the much cheaper prices on food compared to Somerfield and also the fact Tesco want their stores to be in these areas and to make the stores work - Somerfield took them as part of a larger batch and never really bothered making them work. Tesco are a success because people choose to shop their and thats the bottom line - If Somerfield hadn't sold them off, they would now be owned by the Co-Op and all of these locations would be in a Co-op-opoly with 2 Co-ops in Lerwick, Kirkwall, Stornoway.

Also, Tesco customer service said the Highland Stores would be added on as part of a general update in the next few weeks when I emailed, as there are a few new stores missing both south and north.
